Milfordians join millions jogging toward health
A new pastime has arisen for those who are physically orientated and for those who want to get some exercise in. This new fad, which in reality has been going on for some time, is jogging. Billy Little, r 1 Milford, has been jogging off and on for over a year. The Lakeland School Board presklent said he became interested in jogging after he heard a program in December of 1975 by Roger Reynolds, a former profootball player, who spoke to the Milford Lions. He ssaid Reynolds interested him in conditioning and all-round exercise. Little usually jogs around three times a week. He said the main thing to think about with jogging is consistency. He said, “jogging is like any physical education exercise. Consistency is what counts.” The Milford jogger also feels that jogging is something one has to work into, no one should at-

tempt to jog 10 miles the first time he or she goes out. He said, “you just kind of got to work into it.” Little does other forms of exercise as well as jogging. He does 300 sit-ups daily and bicycles a great deal, usually more than he jogs. IB Miles A Stretch Another jogger in the Milford area is Homer Miller, who works for The Papers Incorporated. Miller says be jogs about once a week and usually 10 miles at a stretch, even though he has done less, depending on how much time he has. Miller, 25, started jogging while in the sixth grade. He says his school had a track meet at the end of the school year, and that’s how it began. He has since ran on both his junior high and high school track teams. The long distance runner feels jogging is good for a person physically. “I think it’s good for a
VanHemert attends assessors' seminar Turkey Creek Township Assessor Harry M. VanHemert attended the Indiana Assessors’ Association seminar at French Lick from June 26 to 29, an educational program covering such things as variance, transfer of deeds, plat work, law requirements and proper assessing and evaluation procedures. VanHemert is second vice president of the state association and executive director. Speakers at the seminar included the president of the International Association of Assessing Officers of Shreveport, La., and Carlton Phillipi, bead of the state tax board. Loses control, hits mailboxes Cindy L. Rogers, 24, r 2 Syracuse, was cited for driving without a license after a one-car accident at 10.50 pm. Tuesday, June 28, on SR 13,90 feet south of the Syracuse city limits. Rogers told county police her car started slipping on the wet road and she lost control. She then went across the center and hit several mailboxes located on the west side of the road, skidding 144 feet Damage was set at 31,000 to the car owned by John F. Ruggles. Jr., r 4 Syracuse. Mailboxes owned by Don Scarberry, Charles Taylor, Ralph Nisley, John Wogoman and Jack Trammel, all of Bay Vista Drive r 4 Syracuse, were estimated at 325 each in damage. A repair of 315 was given for three steel posts owned by the state highway department. Two caterpillars were crawling across the grass when a butterfly flew over them. person. I’m more mentally relaxed and I feel a lot better.” Good Or Bad Much talk has arisen by doctors about whether jogging is good or bad for a person. In an article written by a fellow newspaper, it stated a case where a person died while jogging. “Karen Krantzcke, a 30-year-' old Australian tennis player, went for a jog after winning a tournament in Tallahassee, Fla. Well into her run, she collapsed and died. A medical examiner said that Krantzcke had cardiac hypertrophy — enlargement of the heart.” The article also quoted some doctors about the strain jogging puts on a person’s heart. Thomas Bassler, a California pathologist who has done autopsies on distance runners, said “no marathon runner ever died of coronary artery disease ... if (they) run one marathon and do not smoke and continue to run at least three six-mile runs a week, they will never have progression of disease in the future.” He says this in regards to those who have heart problems. A doctor who had an opposing opinion states, “There is no data to show that exercising middleaged, sloppy, overweight, cigarette-smoking, paunchy men, 20 per cent of whom are diabetic, will make a bit of difference in survivorship. I say this despite the fact that I have had 454 such people in exercise training programs since 1960.” Whether jogging is good or bad, whether it will help a person live longer and whether one will die from jogging, no one can tell. But one thing is for sure, it’s fun and it’s good exercise and millions are doing it. Annual roast is planned The seventh annual corn and sausage roast, sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Lakeland, North Webster, will be held on Saturday, August 6, from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Dean Jessup, general chairman, announced the roast will be on the front lawn of the Counting House Bank, North Webster.
