Syracuse police department asks for 6% increase in '7B
Members of the Syracuse Town Board met with department heads to discuss their budgets for the 1978 year at the town hall last, Wednesday, June 15. Police Chief Ron Robinson first presented his budget to the board. On salaries. Robinson is asking for a six per cent increase for regular officers pay and a SSOO increase for reserve officers He attributes this to the higher cost of living He mentioned the SSOO increase for the reserves would be up to the discretion of the board A reserve officer can be taken off of nights and put on day shifts as needed Robinson also said reserve officers are needed for special days as graduation, the Fourth of July week end. Memorial Day parade and Halloween night He said, “it all hinges on if we want two cars on at night ’’ The police chief also said he has learned that one of his officers will be retiring in May. so he will have to send another man to the Police Academy in Indianapolis for schooling The officer who is retiring is Joe Thornburg In other parts'of his budget. Robinson is decreasing postage of $25. increasing telephone to S9OO in anticipation of a raise in rates, increasing repairs from $125 to SSOO. and asking for S4OO for travel expenses Postage has been decreased because he found he is not spending as much this year as anticipated He said they are now spending about $55 per month on phone bills For the big increase in repairs. Robinson said he is anticipating some repair work is going to have to be done soon on the gray car The car is three years old and has over 60.000 miles and has not had any major repair work done on it so far .As far as the police budget for the radio is concerned, the chief said he has checked into the radio sen'ice contract and it will be $870.10 per month for 1978 This includes a new bay station to be put in sometime this summer plus battery replacements that will have to be done soon Dry Clean Uniform* . The police department would hke to have uniforms dry cleaned starting m 1978 Robinson estimated they would have two uniforms dry cleaned a week for $5 per week Total cost of drycleaning would be $1,300 Robinson said, "we would like the board to consider this ’’ The dry cleaning would be justfor the regular officers For insurance, the chief said every officer must have false arrest insurance of $550 Vehicle, office, health and accident insurance is also needed Robinson said another thing he would like the board to consider is for the town to take over the family plan insurance for the department This comes to a total of $3,000 a

He said. “I feel that the officers and dispatchers do not work a five day week with two days off and get overtime. They work six days a week.*’ He also said the town doesn't have a pension plan which other towns do. Under dues, Robinson said all officers have to pay the Sheriff's Association $lO while he has to pay sls. “1 see a $5 increase for next year." said Robinson Other wants by Robinson include another radio, sending one of the officers to photography school, purchasing more camera equipment, a new typewriter for the dispatcher's office and possibly more fingerprinting equipment. The chief did say that he wants a list of what the board does not approve in the budget. The board will first meet with Joseph Shew mon, township trustee, and his board before any final decision is made This meeting will be open to the public Street Department Harley Conrad was present to give his budget to the town board Conrad told the board he didn’t get anything he asked for last year, so he wants the same things m 1978 —a leaf picker and 24 ton truck Tranter said the 1977 year is not up as yet and that the leaf picker will probably be bought this year, hopefully before September Conrad added he would also like an additional 4 ton pick up truck for work to be done out at the lift station The board will consider this and his other proposals Fire-Ambulance For the fire and ambulance departmenu, Larry Weaver and Corky Wong were present Weaver told the board he wants the salaries for the captain and secretary raised due to the added work involved with the EMS For emergency calls, the budget was raised from $5 per call to $6 per call The number of fire drills. EMS drills and meetings was also raised For fire drills. Weaver is asking for 18 fire drills instead of 12 The number of EMS drills was raised to 18 with 25 men for the drills and the meetings were raised to 15 instead of 12 also going to 25 men to attend the meetings Dispatchers pay was budgeted at three at $6,300 and one at $7,106 For supplies. Weaver told the board they are going to have to purchase more protective clothing, boots, and helmets He also said the ladders are getting in pretty bad shape and a pumper truck could be added Second Ambulance Wong asked the board to consider a second ambulance He said the present one is starting to fall apart a bit and a second one
would be helpful if two calls are received at the same time Tranter said they should wait to see what the state is going to do as far as funding is concerned. Other things wanted by the fire and ambulance departments are additional home receivers, scott air packs and tanks ahd a twoway radio for the captain. Park Finally, the park department budget was considered. No one was present from the department. They are asking for $2,500 for lifeguards which is up from the $1,886 budgeted for 1977 Building repair increased S2OO. restroom supplies increased S2OO. labor was set at $950.78 with outside labor at $1,040, and mowing increased SI,OOO as well as park equipment. The telephone stayed the same NIPSCo Union ratifies contract HAMMOND — The agreement between Northern Indiana Public Service Company and United Steelworkers of America, was ratified last Wednesday bymembers of Local 12775, representing some 3,300 production, maintenance, construction. operating and laboratory personnel of NIPSCo. Bargaining teams for NIPSCo and local 13796 - Steelworkers of America, representing clerical workers, reached agreement on a new three-year contract in the earlymorning hours of Thursday. June 16. Other features of the pacts are improved pensions, life and medical insurance, holidays, vacations, working conditions and other fnnge benefits The union leader said the clerical agreement is subject to ratification by members of Local 13796 Voting will be via a mail ballot distributed in the near future Motorcycle hits chuckhole, loses control, skids Roger D. Mann. 35. r 3 Syracuse, was involved in a motorcycle accident on CR 300E. one-half mile north CR 1000 N at 5 45 a m Thursday . June 16. Mann told county police he hit a chuckhole and lost control of his cycle He then went 119 feet before hitting the road and skidding an additional 427 feet before stopping He received cuts to his right shoulder and right elbow He was taken to Goshen Hospital by Syracuse EMS for treatment and later released Damage was estimated at S4OO to the motorcycle.
