Farm exports may score record $ 24 billion in fiscal 1977
US farm exports may be headed for another record in fiscal 1977, about $24 billion, topping fiscal 1976 by over $1 billion, according to “Outlook for US Agricultural Exports” issued recently by the US Department of Agriculture. Agricultural imports were forecast as $13.6 billion, over $3 billion more than in fiscal 1976 mainly due to a doubled value of coffee, tea and cocoa imports. This year’s trade balance for agriculture is likely to stand at $10.4 billion, compared with $12.25 billion for fiscal 1976. Cotton, oil seed and products, livestock products, fruit, nut and vegetable exports all gained in value over the year earlier from October 1976 to March 1977, while exports of grains fell. Grain exports for the year may be 10 per cent below fiscal 1976. Farm exports to Western Europe, which were up 28 per cent during the first half, may total $8.3 billion for the year, compared to $7.2 billion in fiscal 1976. The increase for the year, roughly 10 per cent, was due to last year’s European drought, economic recovery and higher soybean prices Exports to Japan, up well over one-quarter from fiscal 1976, may
