Bethel's annual gatherings enjoyed by all

By BETTY SMITH The Bethel Church of the Brethren in Milford has held an all-church-family birthday party annually for almost twenty years now and it has become a highlight of the church year for both old and young The church through the years has had a special emphasis on family life and has enjoyed many familytype affairs The one that has been consistent even- year has been the birthday party. Most of the birthday nights have been planned under the direction of the womens fellowship of the church. The birthday night this year was held on Sunday night. June 12. and the program for the evening was given by Mrs Don Wysong of the New Paris com munity. Mrs Wysong was a former school teacher and is now teaching at the Elkhart Art League She also does some private teaching Mrs. Wysong related the program to our -lives as Christians, starting with the small piece of clay that she starts with and following through to a finished product. Pointing out our differences and our likenesses, according to the life we lead she noted that sometimes beauty is only on the outside, like a pot that has not fired correctly on the inside m the kiln She noted that we. must struggle to be uniform in our lives as Christians and still maintain our own personality, as do handmade clay vessels Tables for the party this year were circled around the potter s wheel and decorations were cleverly arranged for each month of the year by Erma Chambers Others on the com- ~ mittee were Bernice Dwyer. Iva Neff and Helen Vanlaningham Other activities held annually are a camp-out by the Friendship class and a men s and boy’s camp-out in the fall. Sometimes entire families attend the fall camp-out and sometimes a dinner on Sunday, but the men always, treat the rest of the church to a good dinner at this event The togetherness in the outdoor atmosphere if a special one for the church Services.for their Sunday are held outdoors at the Snider's Woods camp-site some years. » • Families Important If we go back to the Bible, we can see from the beginning what importantce family life has had. When Adam was a one in the Garden of Eden, he saw that he needed a companion and thus made Eve and they (later had a

family When Joseph was sold into Egypt by his brothers, it did not break the family bond When his family was in trouble and he had an opportunity to help by settling in Egypt because of the famine in their homeland, he did not hesitate. One of the great leaders. Moses, of the Old Testament was protected by his sister as he lay in the bullrushes before being found by the Pharoah’s daughter Thus his life was spared One of the 10 commandments has to do with honoring our fathers and mothers that our days may be long upon the land, which the Lord has given us. In the days of Noah, the Lord preserved his family on the ark as well as the

pairs of animals so the family life in the world might go on. In the New Testament, there is no less emphasis on the strength in families. The testament starts with a geneology of the family of Christ. We see various family emphasis in the book, such as Mary sharing the story of the coming birth of Jesus with her cousin Elizabeth. Also Jesus’ cousin. John, baptizing him When Christ chose his followers be chose sets erf brothers. We note that Mary, the mother of Jesus, was present at the wedding feast and when the wine ran short, asked her son if something could be done about it. realizing the special gift that had been presented to her son and knowing

he would aid if he could. One of . the most used books in the NewTestament. James, is thought to have been written by the brother of Jesus. This book shows much about putting things taught by Jesus into action. One brother helping another. When we think of all this Biblical history of family relationships, we cannot help but realize it is important that we do things in family groups and it is especially valuable for us to do things in groups as Christian families A church is a Christian serving God. If we lose this family closeness, then life goes out of the organization until it is found again. Praying and working is the answer.
