Summer churchgoers prompt change
With 142 families registered at Saint Martin de Porres Catholic Church. Syracuse, 100 of those families move in and out of the parish and are week enders or summer residents. This situation is a strange one to a church, said Father Kenneth Sarrazine, since most Catholic churches have dwindling attendance in the summer months, where his church increases. "This is where they go,” said the father. From Memorial Day through Labor Day. the attendance at the parish for mass, confessions and communion more than doubles. Last year, persons in the aisles were a common sight. To alleviate the problem, a second mass is being held on Saturday night and a third mass has been added to the Sunday schedule of the church. The summer schedule is masses on Saturday, 5 and 6:15 pm. Sunday. 7:15, 9 and 10:45 a.m. "It’s like visiting your relatives,” Father Sarrazine said. You don't intend to stay so you don't get yourself involved, he explained. Some of the summer visitors to the church do make generous donations to the church, which are helpful, the priest said. Twice as many persons attended mass at the church last Saturday night, as would normally and the Sunday attendance was also doubled, illustrating the expanded mass schedule is needed. The church did advertise the new mass schedule at local motels and other places where out-of towners might stay while in the area. “Our people regard Sunday worship as a normal part of their life,” Father Sarrazine said. In the Catholic church, the church is one worldwide family with members moving in or out of a particular parish. Salem BY MRS HERB MOREHOUSE
