4,000 pound range without undue strain. Travel trailers weighing more than 5,000 pounds should be towed by pickup trucks. Compact cars with less than 95 horsepower should not be expected to tow anything but a lightweight tent trailer. Check the towing capability of your car by consulting the owner’s manual, or calling the dealer for the manufacturer’s towing recommendations. No matter what size trailer you’ll be towing, a good solid trailer hitch is essential. Bumper hitches are not acceptable for trailers weighing more than 500 pounds. Frame hitches, which are either bolted or welded directly to the frame, are preferable for all but the lightest trailers. Non-equalizing frame hitches place most of the trailer s weight tn the rear axle of your car. which can adversely affect handling characteristics, especially with heavier trailers. Equalizing hitches distribute the load more evenly over both car and trailer axles. Check your insurance coverage to make certain you are protected when towing a trailer. As a rule, the liability and property damage provisions of your car insurance apply to the trailer, but collision, theft, fire and comprehensive coverage must usually be purchased separately. The Club also points out that driving with a trailer is vastly different from merely driving a car. In this regard, six special skills are necessary. - A motorist pulling a trailer should start slowly, allowing more time for other traffic to clear before moving onto the highway. Acceleration should be even, with frequent brief glances into the mirror to check not only following traffic, but also the actions of the trailer. — Turning corners while towing a trailer requires different driving techniques The trailer wheels will not follow the exact path of the car's rear wheels, but will cut closer to the inside curbing. Consequently, the driver should position the car and trailer farther from the curb before beginning the turn. — In overtaking and passing other vehicles, a driver must remember that the towed vehicle will reduce acceleration

capablility, and that more distance must be allowed in returning to the proper lane. — Being overtaken and passed also calls for special techniques. Your speed is slower than most vehicles on the road, and b jsses or trucks are likely to pass. you. When they do, the air they push aside will tend to cause the rear of your trailer to move to the right. Almost immediately, the same thing will happen to the front of your trailer. This necessitates a gentle but alert steering correction. Braking should be avoided. — Slowing and stopping require additional time because the extra weight and overall load distribution affects not only the action of the brakes, but also springs, sock absorbers, and the linkage of car and trailer — Backing the trailer requires the most exacting skill The trailer will back left if you turn the car wheel right, and vice versa. The linkage and position of the trailer wheels in relation to the car wheels also will cause a lag in the rig’s response.
