How will we be remembered? By REV. RICHARD BOYD ' First Brethren Church, Milford Scripture Lesson: Hebrews 11:17-12:2 Memorial Day is a Civil Holiday and has no connection with the history of the church, except Christians have participated. This, of course, does not mean the church should not take part or support its functions. The history of Memorial Day has a mixed beginning. One source says that Gen. John A. Logan, Commander in Chief of the Grand Army of the Republic, named May 30, for decorating the graves of the last union volunteers. Another source suggests that Decoration Day began in the South in 1866, on April 25 or 26, at Friendship Cemetery In Columbus, Miss. Another source says that it all began in Linwood Cemetary, Columbus, Ga. Wherever the beginning, we now have a nationally recognized Day to honor not only the war dead, but even the graves of those not in military service. As we think about the heritage we enjoy in the United States, we cannot ignore the part the Christians have played in making our Nation what it is today. Many of our greatest leaders have claimed a deep Faith In Jesus Christ and a reliance on God's Word as the guide for their life. Two Presidents that were about their faith were Abraham ; Lincoln and the incumbant Jimmy Carter. ’ j The writer of The Book of Hebrews Is calling to remembrance the great heritage, or “the great cloud of witnesses," in the minds of the readers. How important it was that they remembered what great sacrifice hacFbeen made that they might draw courage from them to rise to the occasion of the time. It is just as important today that we draw the courage and sacrifice of our forefathers to strengthen us to meet the demands of the times. Many have given their life that we might enjoy freedom. Surely we can do our part to maintain that freedom. In II Timothy 1 Paul writes that he calls to mind the faith of Timothy, his mother Eunice and his grandmother Lois. As we think of our ancestors we remember those qualities which were good or made them great. We try to forget the bad or ugly things. What will our generation be remembered for? Will we be a nation that turned to God or one that turned away? Let us take for our example the hundreds of years and thousands of Christians who have sought to serve God. Let it never be said that the Christians of this age turned away from God.
