Actors with pencils " That’s director Richard Williams' description of the animators who drew "Raggedy .Ann & Andy,” the feature-length animated musical opening Friday at the Pickwick Theatre The Bobbs-Merrill-ITT presentation for 20th Century - Fox release, wntten by Patricia Thackray and Max Wilk is based on characters created by newspaper political cartoonist Johnny Gruelle in the early 1900's. But the screen personalities of Raggedy Ann. Andy and the other denizens of the “deep deep woods" of fantasy, come from! the soaring imagination of Grim Natwick. Art Babbitt. Emory Hawkins. Corny Cole. Tissa David and other artists, <j Never heard of them 0 That's not surprising since animators — with the exception of Walt Disney — are rarely as well-known as their brain-children Few moviegoers, for example, would; rush out to see the “latest Art Babbitt picture " Yet Babbitt's sketches have been dazzling audiences for nearly half a century starting with "The Three Little Pigs" (on which he was one of four animators' in: 1933 A few years later, he took a droopy canine, the outcast of; Disney's animation menagerie, and gave him a new personality: — as Goofy. Next came the drunken mice ip "Dumbo." Papa Gepetto in "Pinocchio " and the dancing mushrooms in "Fan--tasia.” For "Raggedy Ann & Andy,'* Babbitt's fertile imagination was focused on the ' Camel with the Wrinkled Knees." a woebegone refugee from the Sahara sands!, looking desperately for a home Babbitt spent several weeks, defining the camel's personality before he put pen to paper "Finally. I decided the camel was three personalities, in one body There's a back end that's very dumb, a front end that's a little brighter, and the head w hich w ishes the other two would get together "The result is like watching a schizophrenic Ray Bolger in

Twentieth Century-Fox releases. action The camel feels sorry for himself, particularly when he’s singing his favorite song. 'Blue', and he also sees mirages But he sees them from a camel's perspective, rather than a human being's." An equally careful character analysis for "Raggedy Ann & Andy” went into Emory Hawkins' creation of “The Greedy.” perhaps the most offbeat "monster" in the annals of animation. "The Greedy isn't really a person; he's more like a place." said Hawkins "He's a giant glob of whipped cream, marshmallow fudge, banana taffy, and other sugary delights From the moment Raggedy .Ann and Andy find themselves sailing toward "The Greedy," in a giant dixie cup. watching gum drops and maraschino cherries drift by. he is constantly in flux “When you least expect it, he forms hands out of taffy or candycane teeth, ' Hawkins continued "One second, he is sweet and soft and mushy, and the next he’s a towering wave of chocolate sauce.”

While this metamorphosis is going on. “The Greedy" sings, in a gurgling bellow, of his search for a "sweet heart.” Remarkably spry at the age of 86. Natwick is proud of one contribution he made to "Raggedy Ann & Andy" without lifting a pencil — the work of his protege. Tissa David. It was to Ms David, one of the rare women who has battled to the top of the animation world, that fell the task of derising the personality of Raggedy Ann herself. "If the work is good." she says in an accent which betrays her upbringing in the Carpathian Mountains of Hungary, “then perhaps I will prove a point. To create a female character, in an animated film, you must think like a woman and ‘feel’ like a woman In other w ords, you must be a woman." The guidelines for these and other animators came from director Richard Williams (an Academy Award Winning animator in his own right) and designer Cornelius "Corny''
