Feedback received on traffic recommendations
John Cripe, Syracuse Town Board member, reported to-the board last night (Tuesday) that he has received some feedback concerning the 13 proposed traffic recommendations submitted to the board by the traffic committee at the board's last meeting. May 3. Cripe told the two other board members present. David Nine and Clifford Nicodemus. that his feedback mainly concerns recommendations number four and five. These deal w ith running Pickwick Road across skinner ditch to connect it with the stop light on SR 13 and putting a three way stop at Kinder Drive and Pickwick Drive in Wawasee Heights Cripe said the people he has talked to have opposed both recommendations He also said that these recommendations might cause some problems, especially number four, because of the w idth of the present road David Nine next reported that duck crossing signs will be placed at the bridge on SR 13 near the town hall He said the signs have been donated so the town would not have to pay for them. Nine made this statement after a comment was made from the floor saying the duck crossing signs would be silly The board will make a decision concerning these 13 recommendations at a later date .Any feedback from the public would be appreciated "Rabbit Hutch” A question concerning a house in Wawasee Heights which resembles a rabbit hutch was brought to A1 Bauer, building commissioner, by Cripe at the meeting Cripe said the building "looks like a home for furry animals" and has received much concern from residents of Wawasee Heights Bauer said the permit was issued for a utility shed, but that the structure indeed looks like a rabbit hutch He added there wasn't anything he could do about the situation Robert Reed. Syracuse Town Attorney, said a friendly notice could be sent to the ow ner saying that raising animals in a residential area is against the. zoning ordinance provided that was his intent It was decided Bauer will send this notice to the owners Ron Robinson, Syracuse Police Chief, ne4t reported to the board he needs SIOO for necessary clothing, approximately SBO to purchase two tires for a police car and an undetermined amount of money to send in the radar gun for its yearly check Robinson said he couldn't give the price on the gun, because some work will probably have to be done on it He said he would get an estimate first before any work is started on it Robinson was granted his requests For the street and water department. Robert Farber reminded the board that EPA standards have to be- maintained on the water and sewage plant on testing to be done there He said

new equipment would have to be purchased to meet the standards, costing about $1,200. and testing would have to be in process byJune 24. Nine told Farber to order the equipment. Farber also reported curb and base work has been started on Boston Street and that the paving machine still hasn't been fixed as yet. but will be done so in a few days. Nine reminded Farber that mosquito fogging should be done soon and a water leak in front of Love Furniture needs to be fixed . Farber said he could get a temporary permit from the state to start work on repairing the leak Nine also announced that patching has been completed on 530 East and Pickwick Road along with several other roads in that area A bid has also been accepted by the Kosciusko County Commissioners fear Beer and Slabaugh on work to be done on the Front Street bridge. At this point, several matters were brought up by the floor concerning Wawasee Heights. The first dealt with a 10-acre plot of land owned by Runge Development which needs to be mowed It was brought up that Runge will mow the yard, buyonly after several requests have been made by the board. The town intself has had to mow the property in the past and then send the bill to Runge It was decided to adopt the same policy this year Susan Hunter next raised a question concerning what could be done about a pond Runge owns in the Heights w hich attracts a lot of mosquitos Nine said there is nothing the town board could do about it. but he would request that Runge spray his property . Mrs Hunter also asked whether grass seed will be planted in the Heights and whether some dirt which has been left there will be picked up She received an affirmative answer to both questions. Sew er Hook-ups Several questions were next raised from the floor about sew er hook-ups and easements in Syracuse The first dealt with where the hook-up was for the Country Corner Gift Shop. Farber said an easement had been run behind Foo and Faye Restaurant Reed said this easement had been run behind the buildings, but was then changed because the owners did not want the easement coming up behind their property. Reed added the easement was moved over on the west side nearer to the road, but that the gift shop had somehow gotten left out. He said they will see if something can be worked out for the gift shop The second request dealt with the possibility of running a sewer line on Lakeside Drive behind Merrill's Marina Reed said this has not been done since the area has not been- annexed by the town, but it might possibly be done in late summer or early fall. Farber commented on an-
nexing more sewers. He said. “I think we ought to think about it.” He continued to say they just about have enough money now to photograph and care for the existing sewers and could not afford any new ones. Clifford Poole next request to the board for permission for a man to live in ms trailer he is installing on some property he owns. He said he has applied for a permit for the home on Chicago Street and wants to use the home for an office as well as have the man live there. Reed said that under the zoning ordinance, a residence has to be one-fourth as wide as it is long, which the trailer wouldn't comply with He did say. however, that Bauer could issue a permit for an office afid then Poole could take the other matter to the board of zoning appeals for a variance. Poole will take it to the BZA meeting this Thursday. A request was next granted for a one block area of Syracuse uptown merchants from the bank to the library on the east side to be closed July 7-9. Nine reported that striping was done at uptown Syracuse last Wednesday night for parallel parking spaces. He added that on the night before, the fire department washed down Main Street in preparation of the striping He commended all those involved Farber next mentioned that the TBing has not been done on the sewers as yet because the contractor cancelled out for May 10. They will notify the street department of another date Cripe then commented that the railroad crossing that was just fixed on South Mam Street w asn't too smooth A letter was next read by Nine which was sent by propertyowners on South Lake Street. They were complaining about the Stools property- at 628 South Lake Street which needs cleaning up They request that the board should contact the owners in California and have them mow and clean up the property, remove an old chair and a fallen tree on the property It was brought up that several letters have been sent to Shirlee Stools in California in the past

who always wrote back asking the board to get someone to clean-up the property. Farber said the street department had given Stoots' name of to several boys interested in doing the clean-up, but they never received any replies. It was decided a copy of the letter by the property owners will be sent to Shirlee Stoots to see if something can be done. Nine also read a letter of recommendation he has received by the Indiana Water Control Association on the safe operating of the plant by the street and water department. He gave the letter and a certificate to Farber to give to Harley Conrad, street and water commissioner. Following the ruling against Byrd by the Kosciusko Area Plan Com mission. Mason threatened to erect a building across the road from the airport runway — and it would appear he is making good on his threat.
