I ‘CONGRESSIONAL MAILBAG’ I By Congressman Floyd Fithian
Dear Congressman Fithian: The greatest contribution that government can make to reducing unemployment is to get its own fiscal house in order by systematically working toward a balanced budget and then holding H. This will mean tremendous sacrifices for all of us — in higher taxes or less services and perhaps political suicide for congressmen. But a balanced budget is just as necessary for success in government as with a family or business. Just because the federal

government has the power to borrow and create money to cover the folly of its excess spending doesn’t make the consequences of it any less catastropic. The resulting inflation permeates every aspect of our economy. I think that licking the inflation sprial will help lower unemployemtn. C. S.. Lake County Dear C. S.: You’re right. Getting the federal budget back in line is the surest way I know of to restore health to our economy. And there are a lot of hard money decisions to be made Last week, for example, the House refused to approve a budget resolution which would have allowed a $65.8 billion deficit That would have been $8 billion above the spending ceiling requested by President Carter I voted to send the budget resolution back to committee for more work, because I simply cannot be a party to such excessive spending. Believe it or not, this actually would have raised our federal debt to over SBOO billion! After years of profligate spending, we can't immediately pull ourselves out of the mire and balance the budget next year But 1 am cosponsoring a resolution which would require a SERVICES
balanced federal budget by 1960 and retirement of 5 per cent of the federal debt annually for each of the next 20 years. We’U have to cut out some popular programs and end the notion that the federal government is Santa Claus to everybody. We’ll need to eliminate some special interest tax breaks that rob the treasury of billions of dollars annually. But for the sake of future generations of Americans, we simply must balance the budget. Floyd Fithian Your Congressman Dear Floyd, This idea of unit pricing bothers us. We prefer to see the price of each item we buy. Is anything being done about this in Washington? L. U., Cass County Dear L. U.: My family is concerned about this, too. Several bills are pending before a House subcommittee to permit both unit and item pricing. None of the bills introduced so far would allow' unit pricing to replace item pricing I plan to keep an eye on this issue, because I know that it concerns many of the families I represent in Indiana. Floyd Fithian Your Congressman * Dear Mr. Fithian: 1 was discharded from the Marine Corps in February, and 1 haven't yet received my discharge certificate. My W-2 form is wrong, too. Because of this, I can’t get a job, collect the severencepay I’m entitled to get, or even collect unemployment benefits. This delay by the Marine Corps is keeping me from earning a living. Can you do anything, or should 1 just wait? C. V., Jasper County Dear C. V.: My office contacted the Marine Corps headquarters and requested that your DD-214 form (discharge certificate) be sent to you as soon as possible. Since then, we have received a return call from headquarters, advising us that your forms are in the mail, so you can get a job. Your severance pay check is being mailed today, in the amount of $10,616.76, the amount which you are entitled to receive due to your 20 per cent disability. You should receive the check within a week I was happy to be of service, and if you encounter any further difficulty I hope you’ll get back in touch. Floyd Fithian Your Congressman Drugs taken from Family Practice The offices of the Family Practice, located on 303 South Huntington Street Syracuse, were broken into sometime last Saturday night, April 30. An undetermined amount of drugs was taken. Syracuse police are still investigating.
