i"The hand that rocks the cradle rules the world"

Bv REV. EVERETT C. H. OWENS The above title speaks of a philosophy that was prevalent in my generation. It is quite obvious that it speaks of motherhood and puts tremendous responsibility on women, and mothers in particular. I also see that it gives to women and mothers an esteem worthy of such a high calling. A son or daughter who has had the privilege of being nurtured physically, mentally, and spiritually by a woman with a mother s heart of concern is indeed a privileged person I am aware that we are living in a day when many mothers work outside the home. This creates circumstances different from the time when society was predominantly rural, and when we lived with an economy where one income could care for the necessities of the family. The changing circumstance* presents new possibilities as well as disciplines for the mother, father and the children. The first responsibility of the parents is the moral, mental, and physical care of the children in the family in their teaching and training, not only by precept, buy by example If we who call ourselves a Christian nation, want to be Christian, we must have Christian

homes. To have Christian families and homes. Jesus Christ must be known for who he is as Savior, Lord and Teacher. I would hope then that a Christian church would be found where mother, father and children would gather regularly for study and worship, learning and fellowship, to better enable the family and home to function in a Christian way. 1 refer to a story found in the Presbyterian Layman for April 1977. After reading this account of Newton's life, think of what he might have been spared had his father been as diligent in his Christian commitment and influence his mother “John Newton was born in London, July 24. 1725. His father was ship's captain and plied the Mediterranean ports. John never saw his father until he was 7; his mother was his constant companion. She was a devout member of the Church of England and saw to it that John attended church, prayed and read the Bible. When she died there was no place for him to go except his father's ship and from the tender age of 8 he lived amidst the cursing, drinking and lewd talk of his father’s ships. At the age of 17. he was seized

for service on a British man-o-war, but escaped and signed on a ship in the slave trade. He soon was known as the ‘‘best blasphemer” on all the British boats. He degenerated into a drunkard, murderer and immoral sailor. In Africa he became so drunk that he missed his boat and for a number of years was the slave of an African woman who, glorying in her power over him, made him depend for his food on the crusts that she tossed under her table. A Portuguese slave ship rescued him and hired him in the slave trade to Charleston, South Carolina. Off Nefoundland, in 1748, a violent storm hit the ship and all hands gave it up for lost. Now 23 years of age, he remembered a sentence from his mother's prayers. “Lord have mercy upon us.” He cried out to God for help and, as he puts it, ‘‘The Lard came from on high and delivered me out of deep waters.” When the battered ship arrived in Ireland he did not forget the mercy of God but quit the sea and prepared himself for ministry in the Church of England He served for ten years as rector of St. Mary’s Woolnuth. In his congregation was Wilberforce and it is no accident that he ac-

cepted the leadership of the forces that abolished slavery in the British Empire. Newton also wrote such hymns as “Amazing Grace.” “How Sweet the Name of Jesus Sounds,” and “Glorious of Thee are Spoken.” In that little church a memorial stone has been erected in his honor. It reads: JOHN NEWTON clerk. Once and Infidel and Libertine, A servant of slaves in Africa was by the mercy of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ Preserved. Restored. Pardoned, And appointed to Preach the Faith he had so long Laboured to destroy. Near the end of his life 1807 he met William Jay on the streets of London. As they exchanged Christian greetings, he said to his friend, “My memory is nearly gone but I remember two things: I am a great sinner and Jesus Christ is a great Saviour.” THIS IS A CHALLENGE TO US AS PARENTS IN ANY TIME — ESPECIALLY NOW.
