Church women, shop raise funds
For the past 15 years, the women of Saint Andrew’s United Methodist Church, Syracuse, have been operating a thrift shop which has raised about $65,000 for church projects. Under the direction of Martha Kinder, originator of the idea, the thrift shop was begun in 1962, to raise money for church furnishings. The church women started the venture at 101 East Pearl Street, and later moved the shop to 131 West Pearl. In 1968, the shop was moved into a former service station at 219 South Huntington, which was leased for six years. The building was purchased by the church women in April 1974. The building was cleaned and spruced up, with remodeling completed and carpeting installed. Tuesday mornings the marking committee arrives at the thrift shop to prepare the donated items

for sale. The items are sorted, prices marked and the clothing hung for display. The items are sold on Fridays from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m., and again on Saturdays from 1 to 4 p.m., each week. All items are donated and none are taken on consignment. “The whole community has cooperated through the years just unbelievably,’’ reflects Mrs. William T. Jones, chairman of the thrift shop committee. Mrs. Jones explained the group feels they’re not only raising church funds but serving the community. Some of the donated items have been given to organizations. Medical supplies were given to the American Legion Auxiliary, Scout uniforms given to Scout masters, and shoes were received by the Lakeland Day Care Center, while costume clothes were presented to the Drama Club at Wawasee High School and Enchanted Hills Playhouse.
