Ridenoure. a representative of the Salem Bank & Trust Co. of Goshen, was gathering signatures of area residents on a petition to have a 1.76 acre tract of land north of Syracuse rezoned for the purpose of erecting a branch bank. 5 YEARS AGO. (Rice) McClure, 37, r 2Syracuse, is fair this morning, according to his wife Barbara, Kosciusko County health nurse. What was believed to be fire caused by children playing with matches caused a SI,OOO bam fire on the Claude Mason farm north of Syracuse. Some two hundred people attending the meeting at the Legion Hall Monday night for the public hearing of the proposed ordinance for a master plan for zoning in Syracuse. Every available chair was taken and people were standing. “The purpose of this meeting is to acquaint the people of Syracuse with the work that the Town Plan Commission has done in the psst months in preparing a master plan for zoning." said Dr. Fred»Clark, chairman of the Town Plan Commission. Frank Johnson, who has been manager of Syracuse Coal and Feed Company for the past fifteen months, left the company last week. As a special courtesy to our patrons, we are also rescinding library fines for overdue books dunng library week. If you have any overdue books, particularly long overdue books, now is the time to return them to us, with no fines charged I’m sure people don't realize how expensive it is to the library to have to replace stolen or lost books. April 11. The poster, which the 11 members worked on. is to be displayed next week. The group will also be working with the other second grade group to clean up litter at the city park on Apnl 23 Plans were also discussed about the next meeting to be held at the high school pool for a swimming party next week. We have four new Hardy Boys adventure books and two new Nancy Drew mystery books in the children’s room We also have 17 other new childrens books. The library received ten more new records from New World Records. This is a gift from the Rockefeller Foundation The records are instrumental and vocal. A new book upstairs is “Sleeping Murder by Agatha Christie. This is the last book of this famous mystery writer.

Enchanted Hills to open 1977 season June 28 with 'Oliver'
Even with the snow outside, it is time to start thinking about summer and the opening of the Enchanted Hills Playhouse. Syracuse, for it's 16th season of fine shows and entertainment. The summer acting company has been hired and designs are being completed for the season opening of the classic Charles Dicken’s tale “Oliver" to play on June 22-25 and June 29-July 2. Following “Oliver," the playhouse stage will be filled with -Ruby Keeler's extravaganza “Dames at Sea” which will opwn July 6 and will run through the ninth and again July 13-16. “Charlie’s Aunt" is next on the bill and will play from July 20-23 and 27-30 The fourth show of the
Spring exhibit set
The Lakeland Art Association’s 20th annual spring exhibit will be held in the women’s building at the I Kosciusko County fairgrounds, Warsaw, the end of the month. Entries will be accepted Saturday, April 23. from 9 a m. until 2 p.m. The exhibit will be open from 1 to 6 p.m. on April 24 with a tea and awards set for 3 p.m. The exhibit will be open April 25 -j 29 from 1 to 8:30 p.m and on April 30 from 1 to 6 p.m. Entries are to be picked up on April 30 from 6 to 7 p.m. Originals only in any media will be accepted. No copies or class work will be accepted. Entries may be in drawings, paintings, prints, sculpture, collage, ceramics, weaving, photography. AU entries must never have been shown before at a Lakeland Art Association spring exhibit. All entries must be ready to hang or they will be refused. Senior High and Junior High students will be separate from the adult division but the same rules will govern them. A member may exhibit three paintings free and four additional at a slight charge. Completing the 1977 line-up of shows, playhouse favorite Becky Borczon will return to Enchanted Hill’s stage to star in the Ethel Merman role of Annie Oakley singing the great Inting Berlin hits like “There’s no Business Like Show Busniness” in “Annie Get Your Gun” which will run August 17-20 and 24-27. In addition, the Enchanted Hills Playhouse will continue showing children’s shows with performances of “Jack and the Beanstalk" and "Hansel and Gretel.”

The art association will not guarantee the return of any work left after pick-up time. County sheriff gives report for March Kosciusko County Sheriff John E. Hammersley has released the following report for the month of March: Miles driven by the 10 vehicles — 26,172 Off duty complaints — 26 Traffic arrests — 34 Complaints answered — 250 Papers served — ‘270 During the month the department’s officers investigated one fatal accident. A total of 77 cars were involved in accidents with 17 persons injured. Estimated damages were $53,320 with property damages set at $2,960. Total damages were $56,280. A total of six persons were arrested following accidents. Four deer were killed. The officers reported 26 of the accidents were in day light hours. 21 at night and three at dusk or dawn for a total of 50 accidents. The jail report shows 63 persons booked by officers of the sheriff's department, eight by members of the state police, 52 by city and other departments for a total of 123. Os the persons arrested. 14 were juvenile boys, four were juvenile girls, 97 were men and eight were women. A total of six first degree burglaries were investigated by the county sheriff s department during the month. 10 second degree burglaries and 18 thefts. Two accidental shootings were investigated as were 18 acts of vandalism, one suicide and two arsons. One from county has driver's license suspended One driver from Kosciusko County — Richard L. Young, r 3 Syracuse, is listed on the latest list of driver's license suspensions from the bureau of motor vehicles. Young’s suspension is from March 7 to June 5 and is for an altered license.

Piper Laurie, who turned her back on a lucrative, long-term movie contract because she wanted more demanding and fulfilling roles, has achieved her goal in her first Hollywood film in approximately 15 years. The Spring open house April 17 at IUSB An informal open house Sunday. April 17, will give high school students and other area residents a chance to learn more about academic programs and facilities at Indiana University at South Bend. The open house will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. in lUSB’s Northside Hall. ’ lUSB’s university division sponsors the semi-annual event. It gives high school students and their parents an opportunity to tour the school’s facilities, get acquainted with the faculty, and ask questions related to career and educational goals. University division director Eugene E. Love said the open house also enables older prospective students to obtain information about IUSB. People who choose to resume their education several years after high school graduation can do so on either a part-time or full-time basis at IUSB. he noted. Representatives of lUSB’s academic divisions and departments will be present to answer questions on admissions, financial aid, counseling “and career guidance, curriculum and other aspects of university life. Piper portrays Margaret White, the fanatically religious mother of Carrie, played by Sissy Spacek. Margaret is an tintense. driven woman, who not only tries to keep her teen-aged daughter ignorant of the facts of life, but tries to instill in the girl a crippling sense of guilt and sin about her developing body and seething emotions. Based on the best-selling novel by Stephen King, “Carrie” was written for the screen by Lawrence D Cohen. The picture is a Paul Monash production of a Brian De Palma film for release by United Artists. It opens Friday at the Pickwich Theatre in Syracuse. John Travolta, Amy Irving, William Katt, Nancy Allen. Betty Buckley and P. J. Soles also have leading roles. "Carrie” is Pipet Laurie’s first theatrical motion pitcure since her magnificent performance in “The Hustler" with Paul Newman and Jackie Gleason in 1961. Hits tree to stop car Debbie L. Garber, r 1 Pierceton, was involved in a one-car accident at 12:20 p.m. early Monday morning, April 11, when her 1966 Pontiac crashed into a tree at 213 N. Harrison Street, Syracuse Garber was driving south on North Harrison Street at about 15 mph when her acceleratdr stuck. She was forced to hit a tree to stop the chr. Damage to her ?ar was estimated at $340. Damage was also done to a maple tree owned by the town of Syracuse
