After dividing movement Bethel builds in Milford
Bethel was in the Solomon’s Creek congregation originally. After a dividing movement, services and Sunday School were held in Milford and a building constructed there named Bethel. The property east of Milford, where the church is, was owned by L. B; Rassi. Volunteer labor built the church and much of the timber was donated from James Arnolds woods. L. M. Neher planned the church. The bell, still in the present belfry, was donated then by several merchants. On November 12. 1905, the church was dedicated in the presence of 500 persons. I. B. Trout, Lanark, 111., was the speaker. Other services at local churches were adjourned and W. R. Deeter thanked those who made the church possible. Some charter members of the church were Jacob and Chloe Neff, Stan and Agnes Neff. T. L. and Mary Hammond. Mrs. Aaron Miller. William and Nina Noss. Melvin and Etta Neff. L. M. and Bertha Neher. Ella Madlem. Ed and Sarah Bowser. Mrs James .Arnold. Arilla Bowers, Elizabeth Hollar. Eva Hollar. Mrs. Margaret Wehrly, W. R. and Sarah Deeter. William and Margaret Greenwait and Henry and Mary Geyer September 11. 1955. the 50th anniversary of the church was observed Rev. W*. Harlan Smith, the pastor then, delivered the morning sermon Special music included a song by Elmo Callander, a former church member. Christian Workers was the first organization of the church This was a study group of all ages, which met on Sunday evenings In January 1901, the Sisters’ Aid Society formed and met in homes and reorganized in 1938. The society made garments in World War II and for storm victims. The present Women’s Fellowship was begun in 1957 by Grace Noss and Mrs. W. Harlan Smith. A Men’s Fellowship has also worked over the years, but incomplete records only outline a portion of this group’s history. It was reorganized several years ago and has quarterly meetings at present. Improvements to the original church were undertaken during the formation of the church’s further development. An educational wing was okayed and during the groundbreaking, the representatives were followed by many young church members taking up the shovels. Inside the cornerstone, laid October 15, 1967. is a list oi charter members.

pictures and newspaper accounts of the 50th anniversary The inside work and remodeling and redecorating of the old building was done byvolunteers and guided by the trustees In 1974, the sanctuary was completely remodeled and new pews, carpeting, and other accessories were installed. The balcony stairs were changed too, for accessibility. 'Who is the greatest in the kingdom of God?' By Rev. A. Wenger, interim pastor Bethel Church of the Brethren “Who is the greatest in the kingdom of God?” This was a very real and important question in the minds erf disciples of Jesus. They wanted to be somebody of importance and status in the group of which they were a part They had a faulty concept of importance and greatness for it was entirely formed by the world in which they lived. They thought that being able to receive whatever they desired, even at the expense of others was a sign of importance and greatness. They were eager to get hold of the chief seats, whether they deserved them or not. They prevailed upon Jesus to give them special privileges. On one occasion when the disciples were bickering for special privilege Jesus calls them to Him and said, "you know

that they which are accounted to rule over the Gentiles exercise lordship over them. But so shall it not be among you: but whoso-ever will be the chiefest, shall be servant of all. For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give His life a ransom for many.” Again and again Jesus reminds His followers that greatness in the kingdom of God is not rated by chief seats and positions of authority over others. Nor by the power to demand being served. The one who would be great in Christ s kingdom will receive his rating from God, not from man. When one truly commits his life to God in Christ Jesus and seeks to serve and please Him, selfish status symbols no longer seem important. Simply knowing that one is a good steward and pleasing to God brings its own rich reward. The reward is that of inner peace, satisfaction, abiding joy and happiness supreme. Such blessings are not possible through seeking the status symbols of greatness in our world. Jesus gave many lessons on how to become great in His kingdom. His very coming as a servant and ministering unto the daily needs of people was evidence of His greatness. All of His teachings, if observed, help us find a purposeful life. Jesus gave several object lessons which are especially fitting to remember if we would grow in true greatness. The disciples asked Jesus, “Who is the greatest in the kingdom of God?” In answering this question Jesus called a little child in their midst and said, “Whosoever

It was during the evening of fellowship that Jesus poured water in a basin then took a towel and girded Himself and began to wash the disciples feet and to wipe their feet with the towel wherewith He was girded." This lowly ministry was Jesus’ way of saying. This is the way of true greatness in My kingdom. I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you.” “Whoever would be great among you. shall be servant to all.”
