Tracy Rinker cops all top honors in state competition
By SUSAN BENNETT Her coach stated last week she knew she could do it. But Tracy Rinker, the Wawasee freshman gymnast, wasn't so sure. “I thought I would do good at something.” Rinker said, "but I didn't think I'd get firsts in everything. I wasn’t that confident. " And get firsts she did, capturing gold medals in vaulting, uneven parallel bars, balance beam and floor exercise to cap her first visit to the state gymnastics meet by receiving the allround trophy. With her performance in the state finals Saturday at Indianapolis. Rinker became the second all-round state champion gymnast produced by Wawasee High School. Jenny Cox was the first from the high school to grab the all-round designation at the initial final in 1973. WINS STATE GOLD — Heather Beer, a Milford Junior High eighth grader, captured first place, in vaulting, in the state MCA gymnastics meet last Saturday. She returned from the meet in Hammond with four silver medals for second place finishes in the floor exercise, balance beam, parallel bars and being named second in the state in all-round competition.

The only shadow was that the whole Wawasee team missed the finals by 1.3 points. “I think we could have done pretty good,” Rinker said. She explained the team, if not totaling enough to clench first, could have garnered second with the points it has been averaging. “It went pretty good, really.” Rinker, said of her first state meet. In warm-ups. the competition polished their respective tricks. “When they went to put the routines together, they weren’t smooth.” Rinker analyzed. “That's where some people got hurt bad.” She believes her vaulting was the best with a 8.85 average for two. The beam score was also one of her best at 8.7. But the uneven bars are her favorite part of com petition “The neatest part about it was when everybody got behind you and stuff." Rinker said of the 2.500 who attended the finals. The 4 foot. 11 inch. 92 pounder said after garnering all the individual awards and mentioning last year’s winner. “So next year I'm going to have a lot to live up to." She said the competition gets harder every year because of the publicity and more gymnasts beginning their training early. The gymnastics equipment at the high school had been put up and Tracy also journeyed to the Elkhart YMCA-YWCA last week to catch some practice. She has worked out there under the guidance of Dan and Pam Poe all year long. Marcia Carpenter. Rinker’s high school coach, doesn't yell much, but coaxes her team members. Rinker said. “They just sit back and watch.” Tracy said of her parent’s involvement with the sport. They don’t seem to mind. “As long as I don't get all up tight about it and stuff." The 15-year-old said, “If I get upset I like to do gymnastics, it makes me feel better.”
