BRAMAN Extension AgenL Home Ec Easter is a happy time, a time to celebrate the coming of spring and the new life that's all around us in the flowers, trees, animals, and birds Along with the deep religious meaning, it’s also an occasion for gifts and games, and many of these involve Easter eggs The egg has always been a symbol of new life, and people have believed that eggs given at this season would bring good luck It’s been a custom to color, decorate and exchange eggs for hundreds of years In Switzerland, children are supposed to receive their eggs from the Easter cuckoo but most countries follow the old German fable of the Easter bunny Eggrolling contests, Easter egg hunts

and coloring eggs still remain popular Coloring eggs can be more fun if you try new and different designs Try a plaid or striped egg by wrapping eggs with rubber bands or strips of narrowing masking tape before placing them in the dye. Be sure the egg is completely dry before removing the bands. Eggs are just as much fun to eat as they are to color. Eggs can be served in many ways and are valuable sources of protein, iron, Vitamin A. Riboflavin and Vitamin D. One egg supplies 80 calories to the diet Eggs should be stored in the refrigerator with the large end up. They are best stored in a covered container, such as an egg carton, to prevent the loss of moisture and absorption of food odors.

Open Door Weekly Report From Senator John B. Augsburger
During the past week, Indiana ) Senate Republicans offered many solutions and alternatives to the - senate Democrat “Bankrupt 1 Budget.” For the past several i weeks the Republican caucus has i worked to put together a balanced, f two-year §tate budget and pro1 perty tax control program that would eliminate the need for a tax increase for four to six years. On Monday, the Democrats in the senate rejected this plan in favor of their own which was filed as a committee report (The Republican plan was presented in the form of a minority committee report.) The Democrat budget would adversely affect the state in the following four ways: 1. The Democrats intend to spend 5153 million more than the state bipartisan revenue estimate indicates the state will collect from its present tax sources 2. The Democrats propose to raid the property tax relief fund 5 by calling for substantially larger amounts of money to be used from the fund for local schools and for cash flow purposes at the first of each fiscal year This threatens the entire replacement program and would end it in the next four years if additional tax sources were not provided. 3. Th' Democrats call for large portions of the tuition reserve fund (or current operating expenses, when it was formerly set aside for cash flow purposes 4 The Democrats set a spending base that will force a tax increase in 1979 when the state no longer has surpluses or reserves The Republican budget, which was rejected, provided the following to ensure a complete program of fiscal solvency for the state: 1. Spend an amount equal to or less than actual revenues the state expects to collect during the next two years The proposal actually would spend 519 million less than the house passed version and 5136 million less than the Democrat budget now pending before the senate.

Governor Bowen's “Second Generation” property tax control program, minus the proposed local option tax on corporations. 5. It took into consideration a revised general fund revenue forecast, one that anticipates an additional 513.5 million ol increased revenues. The Democrat version was passed in the senate March 31, 26 to 22. The senate majority version is expected to go to conference committee after are anticipated rejection in the house. If a compromise cannot be reached by the April 30 session deadline, the governor has indicated he will call for a “special session" which must be concluded by June 15. In other senate action, two house bills were amended and will now go into conference committees. The first, HB 1589, would increase unemployment benefits by 15 per cent The second, HB 1344. is the house version of the police and firemen’s pension reform bill. An amendment to HB 1272, which passed, would require gas pumps to include sales tax on the “pump price” of gasoline. An amendment to HB 1641 which would require gas pumps to include sales tax on the “pump price” of gasoline An amendment to HB 1641 which would repeal the direct primary law of 1975 was passed on Wednesday. The “open scope" teachers' bargaining bill has been killed in the House Education Committee. The opponents of this legislation were concerned that it would infringe upon the public’s rights to determine the kinds of schools they want and would undermine the activities of local school boards.
