Christ’s call New Testament theme
1 /*' ■ < <P* 1/ ro ' A Ja I BaHn 11 By WILLI AM WIDMOYER. pastor Hastings Island Chapel United Methodist Church The most encouraging theme of the New Testament message is the persistence in the call of Jesus Chnst for us and our lives. We are so busy and occupied today that often we neglect His revelations and communications. But still He returns and beckons us' It reminds me of the encounter on the road to Emmaus as recorded in Luke 24:13-53: Two of those who had intended to follow Jesus were walking on a road from Jerusalem to Emmaus They appeared unsure or doubtful about the events that had transpired in the previous few days; an aura of disbelief seemed' to settle about them. I can imagine that the predominant question on their lips was "Why?” They had thought that Jesus was the announced Messiah; but now as they talk about him. they are hesitant to use that title. In a conservative and cautious spirit they refer to him as being merely a prophet! Their despondency was evident as they engaged in a discussion, which nearly digressed into an argument. They were so engrossed with their own concerns and reflections that they hardly noticed that they had been joined by a third person. In fact, even though they did look at him, they didn't recognize him! The stranger asks them what they are discussing and seeks to join them in the con versa bon Finally, he asks them to enlighten him concerning the tragic events which they are recounting But even by this technique of redirecting their attention to his passion. Jesus could not penetrate their overpowering self-concern nor could he inspire them sufficiently to enduce them to discover this true identity. In

their recaptiulation of the recent events the Pilgrims even expressed their hope and desire that this prophet might have been able to liberate Israel from political oppression. Finally, they conclude their resume by informing Jesus of the empty tomb and the disappearance of the body. They were perplexed that the week which started so full of promise could end in such confusion and disappointment. Undaunted by their dejection and inability to recognize Him, Jesus tries again to reach these two men by sharing with them the prophecies and predictions offered by the prophets of the Old Testament concerning /His destiny and passion. But still they are either unable or refuse to recognize Him; aLthis point, we feel that perhaps they are not even listening to Him because they are more preoccupied with their own lamentations! Now, Jesus has employed three techniques in an effort to enlighten them: 1) by his physical appearance before them. 2) by inducing them to discuss those recent events concerning his passion, and 3) by reminding them of the prophecies of the Hebrew prophets. As they near the end of their journey, they invited Jesus to remain with them overnight. Later in the evening, as they sat around the table to dine, they were witness to the last method used by Jesus to identify himself and to communicate with them: Jesus took the bread, blessed it, and gave it to them. Immediately, they realized his true identity. In the solemnity and impressiveness of the symbolized acts of the Eucharist Jesus communicated with them as the Messiah! The reminder of “do this in remembrance of me." the fellowship and communion with Jesus, the similarity of these acts with the ritual of the last supper, and their response to the outpouring of his love and forgiveness for them crystallized his identity and assured them that this person was truly the risen Christ. They were so completely convinced that immediately returned to Jerusalem to tell his disciples and followers that they had seen the risen Christ. In conclusion, this narrative teaches that although men may shut out Jesus from their lives by their own selfish concerns, Jesus will approach them again and again in an effort to serve them and reassure them of His love and His gift of forgiveness of their sins through the Sacrament of Holy Communion

Missionaries served conference
Missionaries served the northern part of Indiana during 1850, when it was part of the Illinois Conference. J. F. Wolf and J. J. Esher served the Island Class, which was an appointment on the Elkhart Circuit. These men were probably the first to hold services in the area. Services were held in the homes and the Hasting Schoolhouse for a while. The first church in Island Class was built in 1876-77 and dedicated May 27.1877. Daniel J. Pontius or John F. Bockman or Adam R Schafer was the pastor during the construction. Which one is not clear, as records are conflicting. The church was not altered until after 1912. A revival w r hich lasted four weeks was held by pastor Rariuk in 1904. During the revival, many conversions were made, such as Harvey Geiger, a former president of North Central College; Leroy Geiger, a past conference superintendent; and Lloyd Haney, pastor of the Culver Emmanuel Church. Remodeling of the church was done when Ambrose Aegerter was pastor in 1912 A comer tower, pulpit recess, and circular pews were installed. L. S. Fisher rededicated the church later that same year. The Ladies' Aide Society, organized January 3. 1917, has presented gifts to the church throughout the years. And the Women’s Missionary Society, begun in 1933. during B G.

Thomas' ministry. When A. L. Keller was the pastor, the Brotherhood was started. Island Chapel was detached from the Nappanee circuit and added to the New Paris circuit in 1937. The church was part of the circuit until it became a student charge in 1954. At the Conference Council of Administration meeting in Oakwood Park, in 1954, the building project for more Sunday school rooms was okayed. The new annex was constructed in 1954-55 lead by Stanley Roederer. The dedication was done by Bishop R. H. Mueller April 17, 1955. After the unexpected death of pastor Roederer, David William Widmoyer, transferred his teaching assignment from Mishawaka to the Hasting Island Chapel United Methodist Church. During pastor Widmoyer’s service, which still continues, the emphasis was placed on youth work. Sermonettes for young people were begun along with youth activities. In 1976, a youth fellowship program was initiated by the congregation. Carpet was placed in the sanctuary and floors were refinished in 1970. The church was struck by lightning during the year, sustaining minimum damage. Bicentennial activities and a centennial observance was undertaken in 1976 by the congregation.
