Cromwell, Syracuse churches one parish
By REV. STEVEN ARCHER Calvary Evangelical Lutheran Church, Cromwell and Grace Lutheran Church, Syracuse, are bound together as separate congregations, yet one parish, sharing the services of pastor Steven Archer. While this situation is not unique — as there are many two-point churches in most denominations — the relationship is this parish is different from most situations. Each church is an existing, vital congregation, conducting ministry in its own local. The churches, sharing the services of the pastor, must therefore carry the load and responsibility of most of the administration. The pastor is called to be the spiritual leader, giving true pastoral care to the congregations, the church councils of each church administrate their congregations. This relationship provides an atmosphere of co-operation, which allows for the congregations to share same functions (joint lenten services, other special services) and yet be able to operate independently in others This parish, with two churches, seeks to provide every opportunity for Lutherans in the area to worship, attend Christian education classes, and participate in church life in either or both congregations. The relationship provides each church the opportunity to function in its own way, with its own tradition and goals, yet, interdependantly — sharing the Lord’s work in common areas.

During the early years, the church was joined with the Salem, Wilmot and Millersburg churches in Elkhart County. Later the Salem Church was sold to the Baptist Church for one dollar.
