State track team receives rings —

Four sectional championship teams honored on Monday night

Four sectional championship teams and one state team were honored during ceremonies at the Wawasee High School Athletic Recognition winter sports night Monday evening. The gymnastic, wrestling, basketball and girl's basketball teams were honored as sectional winners as individual awards were given to selected athletes. The evening began with a Booster club presentation by Jack Francis, in which the members of the girls state track team from Wawasee received state championship rings provided by area banks and the Booster club. Coach Marcia Carpenter. Kathy Bice. Barb Yoder. Lorene Spearman and Barb Brouwer were presented rings. Accepting for Brouwer, who is attending college was her sister Kathy. “This is one of the happiest moments of our life,” said Coach Carpenter. She added they were proud to give the high school the state championship. Individual honors went to athletes in the five winter sports, as selected by teammates or coaches Receiving the individual awards in girls basketball were Kathi Replogle, most valuable player and free throw award. Bea Carvajal, coaches award; and Teresa Carpenter, most improved. In gymnastics awards were given to Tracy Rinker, most valuable player and optional high point; Ronda Hickman, beginning high pointy; and Kathy Brouwer, intermediate high point. Swimming individuals honored are Bill Rosenkranz, most valuable player; Tracy Bartow, got to love it; Kevin Templeton, most improved; and Greg Carpenter, freshmen attitude.

Receiving awards from the wrestling squad were Mitch Ousley, most valuable player and quick pin; Jim Shock, most improved; John Beer, coaches’ award; Dan Andrews, junior varsity coaches' award; and Todd Hardy, freshman coaches' award. Captain's stars were also presented to Keith Cripe and Bryan Smith for their basketball participation. Scholar Athletes Scholar athletes from the junior and senior classes were recognized by Donn Kesler, master of ceremonies. Senior athletes are Deb Bailey. Kim Beezley, Rhonda Byrd, Keith Cripe. Junior class scholar athletes, maintaining at least a 3.0 and above grade average, are John Beer. Eunice Kambs and Pamela Juday honored the freshmen and junior varsity and varsity cheer’ aders who provided spirit during the winter season. Varsity cheerleaders are Kim Beezley, Rhonda Byrd, Andrea Griffith, Barb Yoder and Kathy Brouwer, sponsored by Juday. The junior varsity cheerleaders, under Juday’s leadership are Jenny Boyer, Kim Calobrace. Nancy Amos and Kathie Yoder.
