Melanie Love, assistent manager at Hook’s in Wawasee Village, was surprised to open the February 23 issue of Newsweek magazine and see a* story on page 64 on ‘"The Graying Years'* featuring her sister, Dian Bauer, of Ann Arbor. Mich., whom Melanie calls a “lifetime student'* at the University of Michigan Melanie said she didn't recognize the photo of her sister at first, but did once she saw her name in a feature article. Doug Allen, along with wife Lorraine, opened the North Webster branch office of Lucas Realtors in the Mid-Lakes Shopping Center on the south edge of that town Doug, a broker, will serve as branch manager. ■ Both the Allens are qualified to serve the residents in the Lakeland area, as they have resided in the Syracuse-North Webster area since he retired from the army in 196# and are well acquainted. Heard at the Main Grille. Nappanee: A glass of beer during the "happy hour" costs less than a cup of coffee Diana | (Sandy Duncan) is the cheerful and able “Girl Friday" at the Northern Indiana Public Service Co. office in Syracuse. Most everybody knows that. What they don't know is that she is also a culinary artist of note Witness, for (example, a German chocolate (cake. heavy with calories, she brought to work last Thursday for lounging NIPSCo men. This humble scribe was invited to a small morsel of this delicacy and can attest to its mouth watering goodness Pat McClain, at Wawasee TV and Appliance, is trying her damdest to quit smoking, and has taken to the much-heralded’ Waler Pix method, says she has faith this will do the job for her that other methods have failed to do. All kinds of excitement reigned at the site of the new First Federal Savings & Loan Co. of Wabash as their building was set into place Friday Working in inclement weather (cold and wet), several pieces of heavy equipment sank into the mud. making the job twice as difficult.

The company is shooting for an opening the third week in April. (Note teaser ad elsewhere in this issue.) Members of the 206-member Syracuse VFW Post will be on hand tonight (Wednesday) to greet National Commander T. G. ("Bulldog") Smith of Georgia. Commander Bill Wiggs is urging all members to be on hand when this single honor comes to the local Post. He said this is the first time a national commander has ever visited the Second District, let alone the local Post. Wiggs is still talking about his March 4-9 trip to Washington. D.C., on veterans* affairs with Second District commander Homer Vault of Monticello and the Greenwood commander. Wiggs, a r 3 Syracuse resident, has revealed his ambitions to seek another term as commander of Post 1342. confessing to having turned down a draft effort to get him to run for vice commander of the Second District You can’t say our readers don’t have a sense of humor. Our recent ad seeking a proofreader used the word syntax, but it was misspelled as "snytax.” One reader caught it. found it humorous, and sent along this rejoinder In 1975, an interested reader wrote to the editor of the Tucson Star referring to a January 30 headline reading. "Whom Should Be I-a id Off First?” The letter’s message was that the answer was obvious: “Whom wrote the headline? Him should be laid off first.” I think the above fractures English grammer (sic), therefore I feel I could qualify as a proofreader in grammer (sic). Also. 1 have a knowledge of punctuation and Sentence structure But I don't know nothin’ about syntax. Sorry. Yours very truly. , Look for a new business to open in uptown Syracuse the first of .April. Syracuse now officially has two working stoplights. The lights which flashed warning signals for less than a week on SR 13S near the Dairy Queen are now blinking green, yellow and red. The MJ office in Syracuse has a new smiling face to wait on customers, take news stories and ads Leslie Whitman, formerly of Indianapolis and a graduate of Ball Stale University in journalism. has joined The M-J staff Leslie will be the full time gal in the office supply apd Nancy Searfoss will continue as part time help on The State Bank of Syracuse has replaced the old night deposit, box with a "new (angled machine"
that will be more convenient for customers and will bold more deposits. From the outside the box looks super — but inside the bank the new addition has created a temporary "eye sore." Phil and Millie Beer (Beer & Associates Realtors) left Monday a.m. for Atlanta, Ga., where they will attend a GRI (Graduate Real Estate Institute) during the, week. Only recently did Phil attend a similar school in Florida. An auction by the Lakeland CBers is set for Saturday. March 26. in the North Webster school gym, to benefit the EMS effort in that city. Selling will begin at 11 a.m. Jim Louden was pleasantly surprised to open his Monday morning mail and learn that he has passed the exam for his real estate broker’s license. Others in the area were similarly honored, but Jim didn't know who they all were. With the price of a cup of coffee going to 35 cents (in one case 40 cents), we’ve heard a lot of grumbling, and decided to research our actual cost of a cup of coffee. The M-J “experimental lab” came up with a figure of 4.2 cents per cup. as reported by our financial watchdog Betty Smith including cream and sugar cost. We went further and contacted Lois (Mrs. Maurice) Koher, Lakeland School Corporation hot lunch manager. "It costs us 3 cents per cup of coffee." she said, adding that her figures might be outdated now. She said with a price increase in coffee, she anticipates run 4 cents per cup soon. Mrs. Koher said cream costs 1.6 cents each and sugar .42 cents (less than a half cent) each. Most customers don't use either cream or sugar, our findings reveal. The coffee boycott by some may not bring the price of coffee down, but it will be easier on their nerves. Anyone driving along SR 13 recently might have noticed the stop light is now working near the Dairy Queen. Crewmen were out two week ends ago to get the light working. Syracuse drivers will now have to slow down a bit, or be on the lookout, or they might be stopped by the big. bad red light. Along with all the snow Tuesday, would you believe we even had thunder and lightning? Barbara Midgedt, who works in the Discount Mart, said about 3 a.m. Monday night she heard a big crash near her home in Oakwood Park. When she peeked out to investigate Tuesday morning, she noticed that a big tree had been hit by lightning. Makes you wonder about all this spring weather, doesn't it? At least it made all the school kids happy, they got a day off Tuesday. The old Place of Sweets is getting a new name — The Cow Palace It is not known whether or not the Cow Palace will live up to its name, but one thing is for sure — it will probably drive a lot of people in to see what kind of food they will be serving. Royal milk maybe?
