14 YEARS AGO. MARCH 28.1963 A son, Sam Paul, was born Monday morning, March 25, to Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Beer of r 2 Milford. Sam Paul tipped the scales at eight pounds. The Beers have four other children Colleen, Beth Ann, Kathy and Lee. Gary R. Hollar, radarman third class. USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard W. Hollar of r 2 Milford, is serving aboard the dock landing ship USS Donner, currently engaged in amphibious training exercises with other Atlantic Fleet units in the Caribbean. 24 YEARS AGO. MARCH 26.1953 The fire department was called about 10 o’clock yesterday forenoon to the second floor apartment occupied by Ike Kline and family, and located on the east side of Main street. The trouble was started by an oil burner, but no damage was done by fire. At 5 p.m. Friday the fire department was called to the Marion Hawn home in West Milford. A blaze had broken out in the attic but was supposed to have been extinguished. Shortly after midnight the firemen were called again to the Hawn house and found the attic ablaze They were able to confine the fire to the attic, and no further damage was done. 36 YEARS AGO. MARCH 27. 1947 Melvin L. Hibschman. formerly of Milford, now a well known business man in Mishawaka, has filed his candidacy for mayor of that city, on the Republican ticket. Mr. Hibschman graduated from Milford high school with the class of 1930. He is a member of several prominent organizations in Mishawaka. TheC. S. Myers Ford Sales and Service has announced the installation of some new wheel alignment and balancing equipment for the convenience and service of Milford motorists. Earl Miller, owner of the Milford Iron and Welding Co., and Levi Jones arrived home Sunday evening from Sarasota. Fla., where they spent about 10 days fishing and enjoying the sunny climate of the southern resort state. Mr. Kline, up to date, has secured 97 members for the club and the president is in favor of awarding him the chromium plated casting line in appreciation for his untiring efforts, as soon as he reaches the 100 mark. RAY YODER TAKEN TO GOSHEN HOSPITAL A Syracuse man. Ray Yoder, 61, r 2, was taken to Goshen Hospital at 11:08 p.m., Friday, March 18, after complaining of soreness in the chest and chills. Yoder had also been complaining of a bad cough for the past four to five days. Ambulance arrived at Yoder’s residence at 10:31 p.m.
Milford clerk-treasurer attends budget session
Margaret Brooks, town clerktreasurer of Milford, attended an academy in the Public Service seminar, "City and Town Budget Preparation,” on March 17 in Fort Wayne. The free seminar was available on a limited enrollment basis to city and town elected officials in northeastern Indiana who desired some concentrated training in budget preparation techniques. The seminar was taught by Dr. Herbert E. Sim, chairman of the department of finance and business economics at the University of Notre Dame and a cooperating faculty associate of the Academy in the Public Service. Dr. Sim examined the Indiana local budget process and the relationships between the various officials involved in the annual budget preparations. “City and Town Budget

Wednesday for carrying a portable scanner in his car without a permit. The police officer had observed the scanner in Grumme’s car when he had stopped at the county jail to ask the sheriff questions. The officer followed Grumme and stopped him on Market Street in Warsaw and informed him that it was illegal to have a scanner in a vehicle without a permit. No arrest was made after Grumme explained that he

carried the scanner to listen for calls for grass fires and that he was unaware he had violated the law. FIREPLACE CAUSE OF HOUSE FIRE An overheated fireplace was the cause of a house fire in the home of Tom Burton, r 3 Hess Road, Syracuse, Saturday, March 19, at 5:31 p.m. When fire trucks arrived, the fireplace had cooled down. There was no damage.
