I CONGRESSIONAL MAILBAG’ I By Congressman Floyd Fithian
The following are selected from letters received by Congressman Floyd Fithian, with excerpts from the Congressman's replies. Dear Congressman Fithian: Many elderly persons require regular nursing care, but cannot afford a retirement home or would rather stay in their own home. Isn’t there away that nursing costs can be covered by Medicare? V. 8., Tippecanoe County Dear V. B.: From my conversations with older Hoosiers. I know that they often are happier in their own homes than in a nursing home or a hospital. I have cosponsored legislation that would make it easier for them to do so. One bill would amend the Social Security Act to include the services of licensed nurses under the Medicare and Medicaid programs. This would make possible reimbursement for services performed by nurses without the direct supervision of a physician The other bill would allow a tax credit for persons who provide housing for senior citizens It is my hope that this legislation will be the first step in improving the financial and emotional well-being of our older Americans Floyd Fithian Your Congressman Dear Mr. Fithian: On my way to work 1 heard on the radio that President Carter is considering placing a 25 cent per gallon Ux on gasoline. My husband and I work in different areas, so we must maintain two vehicles. Carpooling is out of the question for either of us. because we have to be ready to jump in the car on a moment’s notice. A 25 cent tex on a gallon of gasoline would make it impossible for me to continue my job. and we would have to go on welfare, which seems ridiculous. What can be done about this? G. V.. Jasper County Dear G. V.: I contacted the White House regarding the rumors of a 25 cent increase on gasoline tax. and 1 was assured that no large in-

crease in gasoline taxes is being considered in any way. The news reports on that subject simply were incorrect. As you may know, I strongly oppose levying additional federal taxes on gasoline. Two years ago, when a proposal for a gasoline tax increase cam£ before the house as part of a major tax bill. I sponsored a successful amendment to kill that increase I can assure you that I will repeat that effort if a major gas tax increase comes before the house again. Floyd Fithian Your Congressman Dear Congressman Fithian: This summer I decided to seek permanent employment in the Commissioned Corps of the Public Health Service. 1 took a physical examination in August, and in OctoSer 1 received a letter informing me that 1 would have to repeat a blood test and supply additional information.
