AROUND J* Tfl J Winter "snowbirds” are beginning to niter back from Florida and points in the south and southwest, along with assorted stories of a cold winter. The best they could say. in most cases, is that their winter was not as severe as ours in the frozen northland. Merl and Maggie Smith got home early last week from a motor trip of over 8.000 miles that took them to Florida and over Interstate 10 to California, where it was a first time visit for Maggie Merl played in the Seniors golf tourney at Clearwater, then spent time at Orlando and Panama City. In Scottsdale. Ariz.. they had dinner with Ralph and Marge Thornburg. At Santa Monica. Calif., they attended the National Drill Team Contest. Other fond memories are of visiting Calico, Nevada, a silver mining town that ran out. became a ghost city and is being restored, and hearing the 1100pipe organ at the huge Mormon Tabernacle at Salt Lake City And John and .Ann Sudlow made their annual pilgrimage to

Nine local Boy Scouts are going to be working hard at various money-making events, in hopes of making a fun trip this summer with two leaders to High Adventure Camp at Land Between The Lakes in Kentucky, a national Boy Scout Adventure camp, for 10-days. Committee chairman Ed Harting said on Monday that around 1700 would be needed, and the first fund-raising event is a car wash this coming Saturday. Watch for posters about town! The W. F. Bob Marion’s indignant ire was aroused when he saw a motorist hit a wild duck crossing South Huntington Street at the bridge. He asked. “Why cant ‘duck crossing’ signs be posted there? After all. we have deer crossing signs along the highway." He may have a point there. Considerable concern has been shown our ducks this year when their spa was frozen over and they found little or no food on the ground. The club held its organizational meeting at the Syracuse Case Monday night with 40 charter members. Mrs. Noble D. Myers spent the holiday season with her daughter and family, the F. R. LeCounts. in Huntington. Then in late January she flew to North Carolina where she spent the next five weeks with son James and his wife, returning home by way of Asheville and Atlanta. According to the "old timers" in North Carolina, this was the worst winter ever, but while it got in the teens some nights, by noon it could be in the 40’s or 50’s, according to Mrs. Myers. Snow on the mountains was still visible when she left. Jean Rogers was one of the millions of people attempting to talk with President Carter on Saturday, and though she didn’t have any success in making a connection she has a “dialing finger" to prove she tried. The 43-voice concert choir from Grace .College. Winona Lake, under the direction of Prof., Donald Ogden, will present a concert at the Wawasee Lakeside Chapel, east side of Wawasee Lake, at 7 p.m., on March 13, as announced by Pastor Harlan Steffan. Ogden organized the concert choir in 1953 and has taken the ensemble on two-week tours every year since 1955. Their repertory is basically sacred with church presentation in view, but includes some secular works for school presentations. Their service includes choral works of the masters with representative works from various periods of music history, A special feature of each service is the musical and spoken presentation of the essential message of the Christian faith and its relevance for our day. Choir members are selected byaudition and include both music and non-music majors. Grace College is a coeducational liberal arts college affiliated with the National Fellowship of Brethren Churches. Sharing the campus with Grace Theological Seminary, a conservative graduate school of theology, Grace Schools this year enrolled 1,168 students, representing 36 states and seven foreign countries, and coming from 16 denominations and many nondenominational churches. Mr. Ogden is an ordained minister in the Brethren Church and serves as minister of music for the Winona Lake, Indiana, congregation. He chairs the music department of the college and teaches in the areas of
church music, conducting, and music appreciation. He holds the BA and MA degrees in sacred music from Bob Jones University.

Kiwanis travelogue to be on Western United States
The Kiwanis Club of Lakeland will present “Trails of the Mountain West," a travelogue by Dennis Cooper on Thursday, March 17. at 7:30 p.m. in the Wawasee High School auditorium. This film, which is fifth in a series of six being shown by the Kiwanis Club this year, follows Coronado's trail as he came north into New Mexico searching for the “Seven Cities of Gold” and retraces the historic mountain trails used by the men who first conquered and settled the great mountain west. The Continental Divide from New Mexico to Alaska, as well as national parks. Indian cliff dwellings, an all-girl rodeo, forest fires, wildlife. Mount McKinley and tales from the past are all featured in this film. Dennis Cooper, who will narrate his travelogue, was born in Spokane. Wash., but soon left to live in his father's lumber camps. After attending college, he and his brother. Don, ran a logging and sawmill operation for several years. He soon became interested in y District Purdue Ag banquet to be held Monday The district Purdue agriculture banquet will be held Monday. March-14, at 6:30 p.m., at the 4-H building in Columbia City. Earl Butz, former US Secretary of Agriculture, will be the evening's speaker. Tickets are available at the county extension office in Warsaw.
