John W. Naab earns regional photo honors
John Naab, senior at Wawasee High School, has received an honorable mention in the photography section of the regional competition of the National Scholastic Art and Photography Awards Contest. Naab. whose black and white photography was chosen from hundreds of entries submitted by students from area high schools, was also honored last year in the contest. His award-winning entrythen was in the experimental color print division This year his photograph was displayed along with other photographs and art work in the gallery of South Bend’s Robert son’s Department Store, host of the contest. John has been an accomplished amateur photographer for several years He has taken many pictures for school clubs and also for the sports section of the Mail Journal. Camp Fire to observe birthday week party
Camp Fire Birthday Week at Syracuse is being observed this month with a birthday party on March 19 at the Scout cabin. The party is set for 1 p.m., with a show at the Pickwick Theater at 2 o'clock. The movie is a Walt Disney presentation and permission slips must be signed by parents and returned to leaders, along with the necessary monies to attend. Parents will then pick the girls up at the theater after the show. Slips must be returned by March 11. A cake decorating contest for all girls is set with first, second, and third place prizes, to be given in each level. Mother can help bake the cake, but it must be decorated by the girl in a Happy Birthday Camp Fire Girls theme. eating at the party. Annual Plant Sale The Wa-Da-Ya-Ki Camp Fire council at Syracuse is having a vegetable plant sale again on two types of tomato plants and a green pepper plant, hybrid varieties. All orders must be turned back in to the leaders by March 23 and all girls participating in the sale will eam a service patch award. Dove's make refrigerator magnets The Dove Blue Birds met Monday, March 7, with Jan Stetler and Jennifer Tuttle serving refreshments to 10 members. The girls worked on foam refrigerator magnets for home. All mothers are more than welcome to taring their children to the library at anytime. We encourage anyone to come-in and just look at the pretty books and get the children acquainted with the library. Stay and read to them if you the time. Story hours and special programs are available for the children as well as a reading club during the summer months. The past few years, we have had a special reading program just for the younger set. Last summer during the Reading Club, we checked out 4,569 books just to the reading club members. A total of 15,473 books were checked out during the yegr. New books continue to arrive and are just waiting to be used. Rachel, also 17 and a junior at Wawasee. is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Stiffler of route 3 Syracuse. She is involved in the National Honor Society and active in the Girls’ Sports club. Sharon's first place honors came with 12 wins and one loss. She won a chess set for her prize. Dick won 11 and lost three. Mike Pruitt won 10 and lost four while Mike Hernandez won 11 and lost five.
