By FRED POWE LI. The Wawasee Warriors put on their war paint and traveled to Triton last Saturday evening where they uphanded sectional defending champions. the Warsaw Tigers 70-66 in overtime action to become the 1977 Triton sectional champs Many spectators and Tiger fans thought it was just a matter of playing the game before the Tigers would gain the crown, but in a performance of enthusiasm and confidence Coach .Merry Lambert's tribe brought home their first sectional championship ever since the school came into existence in 1968 4 TICKETS ON SAI E Non-season ticket holders may purchase regional basketball tickets today from 8 am until 4 pm and from 5 to 7 p m tonight. A highly enthusiastic crowd awaited the Warriors at the gym where a brief, but very emotional ceremony was held m honor of the Warriors In short speeches before the crowd made by team members and school officials all agreed that the fans that had backed the Warriors were as much of the triumph as the players themselves • The game that won the championship wasn't easy by any means as the Wamors held off a strong Tiger- press in the early stages of the first quarter and led 18-13. In the second quarter of action the Wamors maintained their lead of five points with Warrior Bryan Smith scoring a field goal after stealing the ball with only- four seconds remaining. The Warriors- then found themselves in a bit of trouble in the third penod as time after time their shooting attempts failed to find the hoop and Warsaw pulled into the lead 41-39 for the first time with 3:51 left on the clock The Tigers advanced to a 48-43 lead at the end of the period But the Wamors were not giving up their long awaited title yet and by quickly grabbing the Tigers by the .tail in the fourth period forced the game into overtime A field goal by Ken Patton tied the game 62-62 only a couple of seconds before the final buzzer was to sound In the overtime penod the Warriors couldn't have looked better as Ken Patton brought them to a 66(Contmued on page 2)
