1 Congressman Cffii I * Floyd ' Mk » J Fithian * I I (Reports A
The following are selected from letters written to Congressman Fithian, with excerpts from his responses. Dear Congressman Fithian: I am appalled at the attempts to unionize the armed forces of our country. 1 had five years of service in the US.Army, and 1 believe unionization would be nothing short of disaster. I understand there is a bill pending in Congress on the matter. Wliat are your views? =HM. A.. Porter County Dear M.A.: As a fellow veteran, I agree with you. Unionization of the military would run counter to its sole purpose — the defense of our nation —by weakening the chain of command. The union movement has been an important factor in development of the private sector, but I believe it would weaken the effectiveness of the armed services. I have decided to cosponsor legislation that would prohibit union organizing in the military. That matter has been referred to the house armed services committee, and I will do my best to ensure prompt action on it. Floyd Fithian Your Congressman Dear Congressman Fithian: For eight years I was employed by the Federal Aviation Administration as an air traffic controller. In March of 1976 I quit my job and moved to Indiana to attend college. 1 enjoyed air traffic control and now 1 want to get back into the field. I applied for reemployment in August and December, but as of yet, I have heard nothing. Then I found out that a group of new trainees was hired in December. Why couldn’t 1, who already had training and experience, be re-hired at that time? R. H„ Lake County Dear R. H.: When the FAA requests a list of names from which to draw for placement and training, the Civil Service Commission provides a list of certified eligible persons The last time such a list was

certified to your regional office of die FAA was in August 1976. Any individual hired by the FAA must have applied for a position prior to that time. Your name was placed on the Civil Service roster when you for re-employment in August, so your name undoubtedly will be on the next list of eligibles. That list should be certified to the FAA sometime within the next few months. If you have any problems, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with me again. Floyd Fithian Your Congressman Dear Mr.Fithian: I am 11 years old and I’qi very interested in politics, so I thought I'd write to you. How do you like being a Congressman? Kathy S., Pulaski County Dear Kathy: I am very happy that you are interested in politics because I believe that the strength and freedom of our country depend on citizens of every age being concerned about our government, I hope that you will put your interest to work, making your views on issues known, studying and voting wisely when you are old enough, and working as a volunteer for candidates or causes that are important to you. When we participate in our government, we can make real differences in what happens to all of us. I guess my work in congress is an attempt to make a difference. I do get frustrated when there are problems which we cannot solve quickly — such as high energy costs — but I\also find it rewarding when <ve do get some action, such as in our successful fight to phase out one of the government’s wasteful bureaucracies. In any case, it is a lot of work — but it’s definitely worth it. I appreciate your comments, and I hope that you and all of your friends will write to me whenever you have ideas to share.
