Church has two-fold purpose
By REV. ROBERT GREENWOOD. Pastor Milford Christian Church The members of Milford Christian Church recognize that the church on earth has a twofold purpose. Christ established His church to be a haven of rest and source of strength for those who would believe in Him and He left to His church the task of spreading His message of love and hope to the world. As a small segment of His body, the church, we are attempting to do just that. To strengthen the membership we have a full program of services, all based on the Bible. Sunday morning we have a graded Sunday-School at 9:30. There is a class'for every age from nursery on up. The lessons taught in these classes are based solidly on the Bible. Our 10:30 Morning Worship centers around a weekly communion together with Christ. The young people of our church worship in graded sessions with sermons and lessons that appeal to their age group and understanding The Sunday Evening Vesper Hour at 7 stresses the family worshipping together as we view ourselves as a part of a greater family — the Family of God. Wednesday evening our adults meet for a

study of the Word of God and prayer time while our youth groups use a very unique approach to studying God’s Word — The Wild West Program. This program was developed by our very able youth minister, Rick Brouillette, and answers a great need for Christian education in today’s world. Along with this, our members sponsor a calling night, a teen singing group, a men’s prayer breakfast and a ladies’ aid, as well as a strong belief in and practice of personal witnessing on a one to one, person-to-person basis. Our mission program, then, reaches out even beyond the sphere of our personal influence as 25 per cent of our offerings now go to support missionaries in Mexico, Africa, the United States and Canada andother parts of the world. To reach out with the positive message of God’s love, we have many volunteers who work in our bus ministry. These people make it possible for many persons to come to services who would not otherwise have the opportunity. We would welcome each and every person seeking a friendly, faithful, Bible believing church to come and worship and serve with us.
'Harry Graham. Robert Bates, Allen Kinsinger. Albert Shockney, Carl Shearer, Eldon Wilson and Robert Greenwood is the present pastor. Harry Om and Mike Hamilton are the only known Timothies of the church and natives of Milford. Orn is preaching in Tucson, Ariz. Hamilton does not have a church at the present time and is living in Northern Indiana with his wife and family. Currently there are some 10 young people from the church enrolled in Bible colleges throughout the USA. In 1902, the church building was remodeled extensively and it was remodeled again in 1948. The Christian Church realized its classes were beginning to show crowded. So the church purchased the Harlan property to the east to serve as the parsonage, as the old parsonage at the west of the church became the junior department building. This parsonage is currently the home of Rick Brouillette, the church’s associate minister, and his family. A planning committee was appointed in 1960 to investigate the future expansion possibilities. Through 1962 the committee met several times and

submitted different plans to the official board. During 1962, Howard Pletcher, Goshen designer, drew the rough sketch and working plans. Approximate price quotes for the construction were provided by Ray Buhrt, Syracuse general contractor, and Herschel Rock, New Paris. The material was submitted to the congregation on June 16, 1963, after it was discussed and approved by the official board. Buhrt and Rock were employed to build the building after the Congregation vote was 87 for and three against. Construction began on July 11, 1963, with Stanley Custer donating the excavation. The completed building provided 13 additional class rooms, a baptistry and choir loft, plus space for seating 300 in the sanctuary. Cash and pledges totaling $30,000 were raised before construction began. The total cost estimate was $90,000, with the remainder financed by

sale of notes to members and others. John Gardner, a church elder, was in charge of the sale of these notes. Again in 1971, the church felt a need and plans were drawn for a Christian activities center (CAC) located to the north of the church building. The congregation voted to put up the building in September of 1971. The dedication was held in June of 1972. Featured are a gymnasium area which serves as a classroom and worship center on Sunday mornings. The building also has a stage area for programs, restroom facilities and a small area that can be used for preparing and serving refreshments for meetings held in the building. And, just this year the church purchased a second parsonage — the former home of Dennis Replogle and family — in order to provide a home for minister Robert Greenwood and his family.
