Triton High School has once again been named by the Indiana High School Athletic Association to host the sectional basketball tournament. This is the third year in a row for Triton to serve as sectional host. Triton first served as sectional host in 1971 and was tournament host again in 1973 before being named by the IHSAA for 1975-1976 and 1977. Triton’s gym seats 3,474 persons and is an excellent facility. The Triton school gym is located on the East edge of the town of Bourbon in Marshall County with the school serving the Junior and Senior High School students from Bourbon, Etna Green and Tippecanoe. Schools participating in the 1977 sectional at Triton are Tippecanoe Valley, Wawasee, Rochester, Warsaw and Triton.

Basketball or Ollamaiitzli

The game of basketball is credited to Dr James Naismith who invented it in 1891 to give YMCA students at Springfield College in Massachusetts an active sport for the winter months Facts now show, however. Dr Naismith’s team may not have been the first. A form of basketball. Ollamaiitzli, was played by the ancient Aztecs. There is some indication that the Aztec’s game wasn’t a game at all The player who scored a basket was entitled to the clothes worn by; the spectators! The captain of the losing team often forfeited his head! Enter Dr. Naismith several centuries later — his game of basketball is a game and this reporter likes it better than Ollamaiitzli! Dr Naismith used old peach baskets for those first goals. His game was an instant success. Dribbling was added to the game in 1898 and open end baskets went into effect in 1906. Prior to that time someone had to climb up and get the ball everytime a basket was made. Hoosier Hysteria Then came to Indiana via the YMCA in the spring of 1893. It was played in Crawfordsville by the YMCA. The first scheduled game in Indiana is believed to have been between Lafayette and host Crawfordsville on March 16, 1894. Crawfordsville came away the victor, 45-21. In 1903 the first attempts were made to organize high schools in the state. Three persons served on the first board of control with 15 high schools participating. Over 600 schools are now members of the Indiana High School Athletic Association. Through the years the IHSAA has grown —a permanent secretary was added to the staff in 1906. Assistants have been added since that time and m recent years girls sports — the first IHSAA girls basketball tournament was held last year with Warsaw claiming the championship crown. The first Indiana High School basketball tourney was played in

1911 in the Old Assembly Hall at Indiana University. It was won by Crawfordsville. That 1911, state championship is the onlyone in the history of Crawfordsville High School, but it is a most fitting one since it went to the school located in the town where the first game in Indiana was played. The other odd thing about that first game is the fact that Crawfordsville defeated Lebanon 24-17. Lebanon then became the state’s powerhouse and won the sectional in 1912. It also claimed victories in 1917 and 1918. Muncie and Muncie Central have a total of five victories between them with Muncie being the state champs in 1928 and 1931 and Muncie Central won the crown in 1951-1952 and again in 1963 Marion’s Giants are the boys to watch this year Marion won its first state crown in 1926. It then claimed the crown in 1975 and again in 1976.
