Wawasee students win state music awards
An the NISBOVA district solo and ensemble contest held last Saturday at Culver High School, members of the Wawasee High School Band received 22 first place and 14 second place ratings. Syracuse coed earns Adrian academic honors
ADRIAN, Mich. — Barbara Brouwer, an Adrian College freshman from Wawasee High School, Syracuse, has been named to the college Dean’s List for the 1976-77 fall semester. To achieve this recognition, a student must maintain a 3.5 or better grade point average on the basis of at least 12 credit hours. Miss Brouwer is an Adrian mathematics and physical education major and academic scholarship recipient. A veteran of women’s volleyball. Barb is currently starting as guard with the intercollegiate basketball team and plans to include tennis and softball in her campus activities. In 1976, Miss Brower graduated from Wawasee High School where she was a National Honor Society student participating in basketball, volleyball, track and softball. Discussing her high school experiences, the coed selected Marcia Carpenter as the Wawasee instructor she most remembered. Mrs. Carpenter really impressed me because she was firm and always in charge,” Barb recalled. “Mrs. Carpenter was also special.” she added, “because she was always willing to help me with my problems.” Barbara’s parents are Mr. and Mrs Jay Brouwer, r 4 Syracuse, and she describes a good relationship with them. “I really
County High School Music contest to be held Feb. 22
The High School Music Contest, sponsored by the Kosciusko County Federated Clubs, has been rescheduled for Sunday, Feb. 20. Originally planned for February 6. the event was postponed because of the severe weather. Mrs. Thomas Fugate, music chairman for the clubs, has announced the change in date but the time, 2:30 p.m., and location, First United Methodist Church, Warsaw, remain the same. Smoking program is being presented by WHS students
For the third year, the Wawasee FEA (Future Educators in Action) will be presenting the American Lung Association's Smoking Education Program to the fourth and fifth grade classes in the Lakeland Community School Corporation. FEA members in the high school’s exploratory teaching program will work in pairs to make the presentations which will include discus sions of what smoking does to the lung, a film on making the decision not to smoke, a demonstration with a smoking dummy, a display of lung sections taken from smokers and non-smokers, and a question and answer period. A training session for the student participants was con ducted at Wawasee on Monday, Feb. 14, by Peggy Van Laere, health educator from the South Bend office of the American Lung Association. The two winners will compete in the district contest where two winners and alternates for the High School Music Clinic Scholarship will be selected. The scholarship pays all expenses for a one-week session at the Indiana University School of Music on the Bloomington campus.

The meeting was brought to order by president Tina Hedington. The pledge to the American flag was led by David Engelberth and the pledge to the 4-H flag was led by Dawn Engelberth. Devotions were led by Linda Engelberth. Roll was answered by telling what you would give someone for ’Valentine’s day. Roil call and secretary’s report were given by Sandy Koeningshof. Health and safety report was given by Jill Rhoades. Several songs were sung which were led by Tony Miller. The Hathaway girls gave a demonstration on rugs and pillows done with the latch hooking method. After recreation the meeting was adjourned for refreshments. The March meeting will be held in the home of Sandy Koeningshof.

Purpose of the study was to learn more on the correct display and storage of the flag and to develop a responsibility and respect for national symbols. ' Library research was done to learn the regulations of flag usage.
