Wawasee wins 75-62 over North Wood

By ESTI KEEN North Wood provided the entertainment Friday as Coach Jerry Lambert’s crew hosted the confrontation. The basketball bout ended with a 75-62 decision in favor of Wawasee. With an 11 point deficit in the second quarter the Warriors kept up a calm and measured composure to hit a staggering 14-of-20 in the second half. By the end of the first quarter fans knew pretty much which way the game was heading as the Warriors went into an 18-11 lead. Warrior defense faithfully did its job forcing North Wood into seven turnovers in the second quarter to open the lead 28-17 with nearly four minutes until the half. It was then that the Panthers broke into a fighting fury, and when 50 seconds lit the board they were down by only three. Wawasee recovered with a successful free throw by Kent Trobaugh five seconds before halftime. Panther Brad Eby tied it up at 31-31 on a three point play in the third. With 6:33 remaining North Wood held its first lead of the game. They led once again at 35-33 A Keith Cripe 15-footer marked the end of Panther reign as Wawasee regained the lead 37-35 with 5:07 left in the third stanza. * The Panthers would once again come close enough to put the lead ip the discomfort zone with 1:08 remaining at 68-62. But Warrior free throw shooting and Cripe’s tirade kept any Panther hopes at bay. Lambert praised team defense and the solid 38-17 rebounding advantage. Keith Cripe led all scoring efforts hitting 10of-17 shots from the field for 27 points while grabbing 13 rebounds. Junior guard Bryan Smith contributed 17 points, grabbing eight rebounds. While senior Norm Vanlaningham tallied 15 points and eight rebounds. The Warriors shot 27-of-54 for a 50 per cent shooting record. ; Now 6-10 overall and 3-4 in the Northern Lakes Conference, Wawasee hosts Northfield this
