Evans converses about 'Marathon Man’ production

Sidney Beckerman, my coproducer, associate producer George Justin and I often discussed this property and talked about who we would have star in it and who would direct it. you know, if this were the best of all possible worlds. for director and Dustin Hoffman for the role of Babe. When we thought about the role of Szell we both kind of thought of Laurence Olivier, but we mentioned his name as if it were just a fantasy. “And yet. who could believe it? We got them all! Not only Schlesinger and Hoffman and Olivier, but Roy Scheider and Bill
Devane and even Marthe Keller. Sometimes, on the set. watching it being made, you know I can't even believe my eyes. I can’t believe that it all happened.” Robert Evans, who made Hollywood history as the head of production for Paramount Pictures, was talking about his production of the screen version of William Goldman’s best* selling thriller, “Marathon Man,” (scripted by Goldman) the second film on which he has served as independent producer. The first was the highly acclaimed “Chinatown.’’ 6n location in New York with John Schlesinger and the cast and crew of “Marathon Man” Evans smiled like the cat who swallowed the canary when he talked about getting the project off the ground. “It’s been done with no compromise at all. I think that’s extraordinary in the history of films.” 'r' Robert Evans is one of the most vital forces in films today, and in his relatively new role as producer that vitality comes through His presence is felt in every aspect of the production from his appearance on the set to taking part in sessions with'the wardrobe department, the art director, the director himself, the
crew, through viewing rushes earlier in the day so he knows where everything is at. “Yet I know my place, too. I never butt in on the set. If I have a suggestion or a point to make, I wait until the proper time. I know how much filmmaking depends on collaboration, a kind of community effort and so I do my part.” But of everything in “Marathon Man” one feels nothing thrills Evans so much as the cast. “I think Dustin was born to play this role. I think Bill Goldman had him in mind when he was writing the novel. And Dustin feels the same way. Plus working with John Schlesinger for Dustin is the most special thing. They are both very proud of that collaboration on ’Midnight Cowboy.’ * “And of course I’ve always had this thing about Laurence Olivier, Who doesn’t? I’ve always wanted to work with him. You know I wanted him for the role of Don Corleone in 'The Godfather.’ So did Francis Coppola. And we were almost set to go with him, but we were worried because he was English and then Francis said Brando agreed to test and so. well, you know the rest. So now at last 1 get a chance to work with him. And he’s extraordinary. He’s so cooperative and agreeable. And incredibly professional.” Beyond the cast and the production values. Evans feels that “Marathon Man” will be a very special film. “It’s the kind of film that's hard to describe. The plot is complicated and the story says something. That’s what I thirik is so marvelous about it all. It’s the kind of first-class entertainment that only the film industry can do so well, an entertaining story that does more than entertain, that leaves you with something. That’s what we’re trying to do. And I deeply believe that we're going to succeed?’

What’s an Untour Tour? It is a tour featuring plenty of free time in each city visited, according to our local travel agents, Gulliver’s, who have put together a two-week tour in June to London, Amsterdam and Paris, topped off with a fabulous Rhine cruise. Besides that, there’s a choice of two departure dates. For details, see Gulliver’s ad in this paper. “Needs replacing but thankful no other damage was done” is what Mrs. Minnie Blough said this week, when telling of the drop box at the local Thrift Shop on South Huntington Street being destroyed last week. She is a faithful and longtime worker at the church-sponsored shop Seems a passerby saw smoke coming from the box located in front of the business place and reported it to authorities, whereby no other damage was done. Cause of the fire was not determined. A bit confused was the duck seen swimming on North Huntington Street last week when pipes froze on top of the hill sending a really good stream of water southward. Also confused Sunday were residents in the area of the city park when an ice hockey area was being made in the parking area of the park, and the snow barrier broke sending water into drives, garages and the like on the east side of the roadway. Some wondering why a hockey rink would be built as such. In-

stead of using the huge lakes available, it’s due to the fact that snow mob ilers and ice fishermen will not refrain from using the cleared off hockey rinks on the lake. WEATHER PREDICTION: Those in the know are predicting another sub-zero week end. (Continued.on page 16)
