1 YEAR AGO. JAN. 21.1976 A 50-star American flag, flown over the U.S Capitol September 29.1975. was presented by second district congressman, Floyd J. Fithian, to Charles Cleyenger, chairman of the SyracuseWawasee Bicentennial Committee. The flag will be flown in Pickwick Place. Bill Pipp is looking forward to January 30. which will be his last day as an employee at Weatherhead Company in Syracuse. Bill is a foreman on the 6 to 2:30 trick, having started with the company September 11. 1952. He’s one of the company’s old line employees. A fire in downtown Warsaw late Sunday evening caused an estimated damage of nearly $1,000,000. The fire believed to have started in the second story of Helfrichs about 11:20 p.m. was reported by a passer byHarold Rensberger, Niles. Mich He reported smoke coming from Helfrich’s. JAN. 18, 1967 Mr and Mrs. Wymond (Pete) Luttman of Syracuse had planned on attending the houseware show at McCormick Center in Chicago on Monday, but fate took a hand and the Center was destroyed by fire late Sunday night. Mr. and Mrs. Luttman had gone to Chicago to attend the Gamble Convention in the Sherman hotel on Sunday. On Sunday night they attended the performance of “Herb Alpert and The Tijuana Brass’’ in the auditorium of McCormick Center. The next morning the Luttmans learned the Center had been destroyed. A Winter Festival is being planned by the Wawasee Area Jaycees to be held on Saturday and Sunday. Feb. 18 and 19. Ev Ganz is the general chairman. The Lakeland school board met on Tuesday evening with representatives of the architectural firm of Mauer. Vanßyn. Ogden and Natali. Inc., and gave final approval to plans and specifications for bidding of
the new Wawasee high school. 29 YEARS AGO, JAN. 17.1957 In the presence of the immediate families, Miss Florence Foster and Eldred Mabie were married at 7:00 o’clock Saturday evening at the Methodist Church with the Rev. Noble Green reading the vows. Mrs. Edith Rodie and daughter, Priscilla, have moved to their new home at the corner of Harrison and Benton Streets. JAN. 21, 1932 There are plenty of one time basketball stars who will gladly take part in the Fat and Lean game in the high school building next Thursday evening, according to George Xanders, chairman in charge, but placing players according to which team they will be best fitted has the lawyer worried. Because all of team and all of the lean ones think this is one time to appear under the caption: Fat. The big basketball game, barreljace and cake walk is to be held for the benefit of the general public to help them part with 10 centses and 20 centses, and to pay off that note the Chamber of Commerce has had at the bank since long years ago when that channel was channelled. Car fire call responded to Members of the Syracuse volunteer fire department responded to a call at 1:23 a.m. Tuesday for a car fire at 112 East Shore Drive, Syracuse. The car, a 1973 Olds Delta, owned by Gordon W. Neterer, was completely engulfed in flames when firemen arrived. Loss was estimated at $2,000. Firemen listed a heat lamp bulb over a motor and a blanket as contributing cause of the fire. One-hundred gallons of water were used by firemen. Young Bushong has been active in Farmhouse fraternity where he was pledged educator and public relations director. He was co-chairman this year of Host and Hostesses for the Old Masters’ program. FFA judging team competes in Marion
The Wawasee Future Farmers of America livestock judging team competed in the Indiana Duroc Breeders contest held last Saturday at Marion, with four members placing in the top 20 individuals. Kevin Coy led the Wawasee group with a score of 218 out of a possible 250. This placed Kevin third in the overall competition. WHS speech team captures fifth place By ESTI KEEN The Wawasee High School speech team placed fifth in the Central Indiana Forensic League Conference Speech Tournament last Saturday at Northfield High School. The CIFL includes schools in north central Indiana ranging from Wawasee to Kokomo High Schools. The fifth place trophy marks the second trophy the team has won this year. They finished third at the Penn tourney last month. Individuals placing for the Warriors were Dan Martin and Mike Steffen, second in their respective divisions; Deb Philips, third; John Naab, a fourth and a fifth; Karen Cooper, fifth; Doug Walker, fifth; and Jan Grindle, seventh. Jenny Ladner placed fourth in her sub-varsity speaking event. Wawasee will be at Columbia City this Saturday and at Whitko the following week.
