Warrior basketball team wins one, loses one

Beat Northridge By ESTI KEEN The Warrior basketball team usually treats their large contingent of fans to a suspenseful contest. but their 60-58 score over Northridge, here Friday had to be one of the best.After holding an eight point lead. Wawasee lost it with a risky 55 seconds remaining m the game, then bucketed three explosivfe charity tosses and held off the threat of two last minute turnovers. After Northridge's Steve Miller hit two baskets — the last of which pulled them over the hump for Ja 58-57 advantage with these 55 seconds left on the clock — the Raiders forced Norm Vanlaningham into a rushed shot on a loose ball Mark Fisher was fouled n the mad scramble but missed the chanty toss. Vanlamngham tied the contest on the first shot then missed the second Keith Cripe grabbed the rebounded foul shot Miller then committed his fifth foul in the second half amfCripe sank both shots and inched Wawasee into a two point lead with 34 seconds left Maneuvering the ball until an open shot could be spyed in tie Warrior defense. Until the last 1:13 neither squad could claim more than a four point lead The Vikings protected their perfect reccrd while the Warriors are down eight in eleven outings. Valley is ranked 16th in the state by the associated press. "We were right with them until the very end," mourned Warrior coach jerry Lambert “1 really think it was just a couple of breaks that made the difference." Wawasee outscored the Vikings by two in the field goal department with a season high 27 of .48. but 17 successful freethrows out of 21 attempts proved to be the Viking’s magic. Girls suffer 53-39 loss

By TERRI HOLTZCLAW The girls' basketball team lost to Elkhart Central, 53-39, last Saturday m<N*ning, leaving them with a 0-7 record, i The girls led the first quarter, 14-7, but were down at the half, 18-23. Seniors Kathi Replogle and Mary Kitson, along with junior Jenny Hughes were top scorers capturing eight points apiece, while both Kitson and Hughes were leading rebounders. Bea Carvajal, one of Wawasee's major players, sat out with a shoulder injury. The girls’ next meet is Wednesday with Northridge on our home courts. Results as follows: Wawasee (39) — Replogle 4,0-0.

The finish does not count against their 8-0 streak. In the eight-team meet, six Wawasee grapplers moved into the finals, and Mitch Ousley, heavyweight , and 157 pound Jim Shock won in their weight classes. Terry Rinker, Kevin Marose. Rick Bauman, and John Beer also participated in final matches. A recurrence of a kidneyproblem flared-up, and Vince Gronendyke was absent from second round matches. Gronendyke did win his first match 10-5, in his 140 weight class. Wayne finished second with 168 points to Wawasee’s 1654 tally. Other finishers were Goshen, 1424; Lowell, 132; Fort Wayne North, 112; Fairfield, 108; and Northridge. 1044 Car strikes fence No injuries were reported in a one car mishap at 12:10 p.m. as Laurabelle Druckamiller. 43. Syracuse, lost control of her 1977 Oldsmobile while westbound in the alley between Sanders and Egbert Avenues in Goshen on Monday. Goshen police said her car hit snow, went out of control and struck a fence along the Robert Haney property. Damages were set at SSO to the fence and $250 to the car.

Wrestlers add two more victories to 1977 record

The Wawasee wrestling team continued its winning ways with two more victories added to the record last week. On Wednesday, Jan. 12. the Warriors topped Rochester 41-12 and on Thursday, Jan. 13, the Warriors were victorious over Bremen. However, all wasn’t perfect with the WHS team as Terry Rinker lost his first match 2-6. Terry, a freshman, had not lost a match since he was in the seventh grade. The score of the Bremen match was 34-18 with three Warriors scoring pins. Joe Gerencser pinned his man in the 107 pound class. Phil Beer pinned his man in the 128 pound class and Rick Bauman scored a pin in the 177 pound class. Hal Hammaker scored a major decision 9-0 in the 119 pound class. Jim Glon decisioned his man in the 147 pound class.

Gymnasts begin season

By TERRI HOLTZCLAW Marcia Carpenter's gymnastics team traveled to Elkhart Central last Monday to start their season. The beginning squad losVwith a score of 54.20 to Central’s 56.85. In the vaulting competition. Rhonda Hickman and Judy Knudsen tied for fourth place. On the uneven bars Sandy Rinker placed third with a score of 5.05. as she also captured a first on the balance beam with 5.30. Wawasee grabbed a one, two. three victory on the floor exercise as Jenny Boyer received first, with 5.50 and Michelle White and Rhonda Hickman tied for second with 5.20. In the intermediate competition the Warriorette's were edged 49.15 to 49.70. In vaulting Rose Easley placed second with 5.00 and Kathi Brouwer was third with 4.95. On the unevens Laurie Brouwer placed second with 3.30 as teammate Sharon Kortenber was third with 2.85. Kathi Brouwer was second on the balance beam with 5.45 as Rose Easley placed fourth. Kathi Brouwer was second on the floor with 5.25 as Laurie Brouwer placed fourth. The optional-team made an excellent debut Wawasee girls performed an exhibition for the Elkhart crowd. The uneven bars were excluded from this competition due to lack of efficient equipment. Freshman Tracy Rinker was the big winner as she walked away with first place in all three events. Her scores were vaulting. 7.35, balance beam 8.15, and floor exercise 8.00.

Warriors who lost to the Bremen Lions besides Rinker were Robby Ladner who lost a decision 3-6, Kevin Marose who was decisioned 5-6, Vince Gronendyke who lost 4-6 and Joel Korenstra who was pinned. Rochester Victory The Warriors defeated the Rochester Zebras by a score of 41-12. Terry Rinker scored a major decision in the 100 pound class — 15-4. Cancellation is due to the junior high basketball tournament. League bowling will resume on February 5.

Warrior B-team is victorious Members of the Wawasee Bteam won two victories in wrestling matches at Bremen and Rochester during the past week. On Thursday the boys wrestled their way to a 43-0 victory over Bremen and on Wednesday they scored a 19-0 victory over Rochester. At Bremen five of the boys received pins and two earned major decisions. Pins were recorded by Mark Dunithan in the 128 class, Mark Walgamuth in the 134 pound class, Larry Germanprez in the 100 pound class, Arnold Garza in the 121 pound class and Sam Norman in the 169 pound class. Craig Luttman received a major decision in the 147 pound class with 10-2 and Jim Hoover won a major decision in the 172 pound class with 9-3. At Rochester i Two pins and three decisions were recorded on Wawasee’s score during the Rochester meet. Arnold Garza pinned his man in the 121 weight class and Dan Andrews pinned his man in the 138 class.
