Milford junior high school building in 1914. It was also m 1878 that Milford’s school was graded And. through the untiring efforts of superintendent James Shepard a commission was received in 1911 The history of Milford*and the school system reveals something new each time we study it. While history does not tell us exactly where or when the high school had its start we do know the first
school building was located where the home of the Wayne Richardsons now stands on South Main street. Later, a little red school house was erected on the lot north of the house now owned by Mr. and Mrs. Harold Young. Next came a white school house which was located near where the United Methodist church now stands, then the Campbell location and then to the present school property where two buildings have served the school population. Dedication ceremonies for the building (the present junior high) were held on December 18. 1914. The following spring the whole town turned out for the laying of the comer stone on May 15. % The first high school commencement exercise was held in the building on May 1. 1915. Before that commencement services were held in the Methodist church. Records of the high school alumni association shows the first class to graduate was in 1903 Class members were Nora Fuller. Barbara Eash of Nappanee, who is currently staying in the home of her daughter Sarah Slabaugh at Milford, celebrated her 91st birthday on Monday of last week. And, on Wednesday, she became a great-great-grandmother (not for the first time) when Rick Graff and wife Kim became the parents of their first child. Jason Ryan. Former Milford residents Roger and Shirley Graff of Fort Wayne are the grandparents. HAVE YOU ever driven around Our Town at a few minutes after 8 a.m. on a snowy morning? Ye ole editor did just that one morning last week and found the ground covered with a beautiful white blanket. Few other people were moving about — the youngsters were already at their studies. Ronn Smith « was seen delivering oil and here and there lights were burning in homes but no other traffic was moving — things were so still and peaceful. It was hard to believe that in just a few short minutes the town would be buzzing as stores and businesses opened for their daily activities. WE LL DO ALMOST anything to get our minds off this cold weather, so surmises Dr. T. A. Miller, local vet and town board president. His suggestion is to wage a guessing contest, perhaps a buck or two on the side, to determine when the large snow bank at the Chore-Time-Brock parking lot will melt. Not a bad idea. But who’s holding the money? ON JANUARY 13. Emma Krauter celebrated her birthday, with a cake provided by Charlie Weisser. She also remarked that she received many calls and gifts from friends. Friends of Churck Berkey pile are chiding him about upsetting his wrecker on Beer Road just east of the Robert Brooks home Tuesday morning. The town truck spun off the road and went into the ditch, and when Berkeypile tried to right the town truck, his wrecker ended up in the ditch alongside the town truck. It took a Sharp Hardware tractor to fetch both vehicles out of the ditch. Chock is reluctant to admit this, but his friends won’t let the story rest.
