Wed., Jan. 19,1977 — THE MAIL-JOURNAL

[ Open Door I Weekly Report From i r Senator John B. Augsburger < (

The Indiana Legislature, having just finished its first full week of the 1977 session, has faced several key issues. TThe first “tax relief bill was out of the Senate on Thursday after a somewhat heated debate. The bill, SB 22, would permit certain surviving spouses, who are less than 65 years of age to receive the old age property tax deduction if the deceased spouse was at least 65. The debate on this bill was centered around the fact that the fiscal impact of the legislation was indeterminable. The author of the bill claimed the cost would be “minimal and was not worth the effort of computing.” Many contended that a “ballpark” figure should be given for the sake of local governments as they go through their budgeting processes. In the end it was concluded by the majority of Senators that SB 22 was fiscally sound and should be passed as an aid for older Indiana citizens. The bill passed by a vote of 37-11.
