Warriors score second win

By ESTI KEEN The Warrior fans were treated to the second basketball victory for Wawasee this season last Saturday evening. The 80-74 romp against visiting Bremen improved Wawasee’s season record to 2-8 and their NLC tally to 1-3, while Bremen fell to 3-8 and 0-4. Losing little time, the Warriors flashed an early 10-2 lead — their most impressive start of the season. The Lions rallied in the fourth to own a 3 point lead, but surrendered in the final moments. Coach Jerry Lambert praised the boys for their spunk. "This has got to be a total team effort. I can’t say enough for these kids. They really had to force themselves to get up. Let’s face it. it’s pretty rough when you’ve only won one game, but they came in here and they were really fired up" After the Warriors raided 19 points in five and one-half minutes, the Lions prepared for their comeback, inserting Hunter and Smith — their main sources of power. Hunter had 6-of-9 shooting performance in the second half to close the Lions in 38-31 by the halftime buzzer. Hunter continued his shooting spree into the third quarter hitting4-of-5 before he was forced to exit with an injured ankle and 3:18 remaining in the stanza. By the time he left. Hunter was responsible for 24 points and 13 rebounds - Bremen trailed close behind 47-45. - The loss didn t seem to put Bremen on a crutch, they looked to Smith and managed to tie the game at 49 Bremen held the lead twice before the third stanza ended 53-53 Bremen Coach Foster didn’t think Hunter s injury hurt their offensive game "Otr shooting didn't seem' to fall off. But he really did the job on the boards and blocked a couple of shots that seemed to make them (Wawasee) think about their shooting a little bit." Bremen had its biggest lead at 80-57 with 6 09. but Wawasee rounded the bend for the home stretch when Norm Vanlaningham gave Wawasee a 62-62 tie on a three point play and then netted a pair of charity tosses with 4 49 left in the game Junior Ken Patton swished a corner shot at 3:26 to pull away 68-64 "I really think that was the turning point. ‘Lambert stated "We hadn’t been running our offense well so we took a time out and told them just to start running it. It worked perfect and Kenny made a nice shot." Vanlaningham paced the Wamors scoring 19 points and nabbing 13 rebounds — his personal best of the season.
