The following Sunday, July 8, the first regular services began with 15 in Sunday School and three classes. Sixteen attended the morning worship and nineteen were present at the evening, service. Robert A. Scheidley, Max E. Zell and the present pastor Norman L. Lincoln. Preaching doctrines By REV. NORMAN L. LINCOLN, pastor Syracuse Church of the Nazarene The theological and doctrinal foundations of the Church of the Nazarene lie in the preaching of the doctrines of holiness and sanctification as taught by John Wesley The background of the Nazarenes is definitely early Methodist, they adhere closely to the original Wesleyan doctrine. Most of the early holiness groups forming the body becoming the Church of the Nazarene. came out of the Methodist Episcopal Church; two of the seven general superintendents were exMethodist ministers. The Nazarene Manual has been called a re-written and modified Methodist Discipline of the early Methodist Church The doctrine of the church is

penitent believers in Christ, the resurrection of the dead and final judgement. Members of this church believe in divine healing but never to the. exclusion of medical agencies. The use of tobacco and alcoholic beverages is denounced. It is a middle of the road church, neither extremely ritualistic nor extremely formal. One church historian calls it the right wing of the holiness movement. The Church of the Nazarene is not the largest of denominations, nor among the smallest. Membership in the US was reported at 364.789 in 1970, with an additional 11,442 in Canada and 87,256 abroad. At that time, the report was 7,557 churches and stations at home and overseas. Nine liberal art colleges are maintained, a Bible College and Theological Seminary in Kansas City. Our college in this district is Olivet Nazarene College at Kankakee, 111. The pastor and his people extend an invitation to all who are looking for a church home. We have a Sunday School that teaches the whole word of God and a church where the pursuit of holiness is a requirement of the church membership. We have a friendly church that wants souls, more than your money and everyone of the flock is important to the shepherd. If this is the type church you are looking for, come and be part of the family.
