Solomon Creek part of Elkhart county history By REV. DONALD SHE LINE The Solomon Creek church has been a part of the history of Elkhart county and of Benton township. It all began back in 1856, w hich makes it one of the older churches in the area. You might ask how the church received its name. I found two versions of it, and I will give both of them since we are not positive which is, correct. First, a man by the name of Solom on Hapner. one of the first settlers of Noble county, homesteaded the land at the headwaters of the stream, and the stream was named after him. The second version is that a man from an eastern state made an exploratory trip through this part of the country back when only a few white people were settled in this area. When he went back home, he told his friends of seeing a wonderful country out in Indiana He told them about the land being level, fertile and covered with large sugar, beech, ash, elm. poplar and walnut trees. He also told them of seeing a beautiful stream of clear, cold water, winding its way down through the giant trees that stretched out on both sides of its banks. He praised and talked so much about the beauty of the stream and the country around it that his neighbors said. “Let’s go and see Solomon’s Creek” and the name stuck with it from that time on. The Solomon Creek community was actually settled some thirty yeurs before the church was built in 1856. Among the early settlers was a family by the name of Ott, and Mr. David Ott, who was a member of the Solomon Creek community for many years was the first white child born in the present area. He was born in 1835. and lived until 1925. Other families to settle here were the Hapners. Blacks, Bungers, Beards. Judys, Darrs and also the Brices and Pricketts. But it was Mr. Nimrod Prickett who was instrumental in establishing the church. The Prickett family moved here from Ohio and were actually on their way to Michigan to start a blacksmith shop. They camped for the night along the Elkhart River where the town of Benton is now located. There was also an Indian camp at the same location. When the Prickett's

awoke the next morning, one of their horses was missing. Thinking the Indians had stolen the horse, Mr. Prickett went to the chief of the tribe and explained about his missing horse. The chief told Mr Prickett that none of his people would steal the horse and perhaps it got loose during the night and had started for its old home. One of the Pigpkett boys mounted the other horse and started back over the trail they had taken from Ohio. He caught up with the horse a few miles north of Fort Wayne. This caused several days delay in the Prickett’s journey Meanwhile, Mr. Prickett was not idle. He was looking over the area and decided that Michigan didn’t have as much to offer as what he had seen around Solomon Creek and so the family settled on land across from the present church building. Most of the early settlers were from Ohio and Pennsylvania and many of them were related and all were deeply religious. Soon they desired to build a church so that all the community could meet in a central location. The first church was a frame building. It stood in the area that is now a cemetery, just north of the big pines that still stand. They called it the Albright Evangelical church. As the people were mostly German, their services were held in the German language. But Mr. Nimrod Prickett was English, and could not understand the German language. He had heard of a revival meeting being held at

Indian Village and he found a preacher by the name of Fletcher Thomas preaching there. They became good friends and Rev. Thomas was asked to preach at the church built at Solomon's Creek. He started preaching and the service turned into a revivaltype meeting and not less than 75 persons were converted. This new group of people did not want to have a German type service, so they got together and held services in their homes. In 1865, at the close of the Civil War, they built a frame church closer to the edge of Solomon Creek and called it Zion' church and was included with a Methodist circuit of Indian Village and Benton. In 1871, the annual St. Joseph conference was held at the church and in 1873, Solomon Creek was joined with the Ligonier Territory which included the Burr Oak church. These were now the United Brethren. The old frame church became in bad state of repair and so they built a brick church building and worshiped together. The old frame building was torn down in the 1930’5. In 1889, the United Brethren church needed repairs and some thought it should be nearer the cemetery so they decided to move the building. It was moved to the present location and remodeled inside and out for a high cost of $1,650. It was then dedicated to the Lord on January 26, 1890. In the late 1890’s a large revival took place that lasted nine weeks with 72 conversions. Then a new

It was rebuilt and still stands but is rented out, since the present pastor has his own home. In 1941, the church was again remodeled at the cost of $5,500 with extra classrooms being added. In 1973, the basement was completely remodeled and carpet installed and in 1975, the sanctuary had new pews and carpet installed. The church has 122 members at this time and still serves the community as a “Little Country Church” where the gospel of Jesus Christ is still preached. In 1970, the United Brethren and the Methodists merged and the present church is United Methodist and belongs to the Elkhart District oi the North Indiana Conference Rev. Donald Sheline has been the pastor for the past seven years and Dr. Willis Gierhart is the district superintendent. For 120 years, through rain, sleet, snow, sunshine, good years and poor years, this church has served the Solomon Creek community. It is our prayer that it might keep serving this community until Jesus Christ comes in all His glory to redeem His faithful.
