Remembers early days
A former resident of Syracuse, Donald W. Bailey, wrote the Mail-Journal of some memories he had from his boyhood spent in the community at the turn of the century. Bailey was born in a house at the corner of Washington and Frazier streets on April 23. 1899. The present resident of Orland remembers going to school in the schoolhouse built in 1908. He writes that his name was placed in the box in the cornerstone of the school. The “W” middle initial in his name is for Weaver, the surname of his grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Issac Weaver. Bailey’s mother was the former Martha Weaver. Mr. Weaver had been a toy maker in Germany before moving to the United States in 1834. And Weaver made most of the furniture in the family home. Bailey s other grandfather, George H. Bailey, was a well driver around Syracuse. Grandfather Bailey was the last Civil War veteran in the county. Both sets of his grandparents are buried in the Syracuse cemetery, just one block north of the house where he was born. Visiting Orland in 1917, Bailey met the girl who would become his wife. They married on August 6. 1919. During their 55 years in Orland, the Baileys had two children. Their daughter died five years ago.
