Warriors record their first victory

The Northridge Raiders may have walked off with the championship of the Wawasee holiday tourney last Saturday night but Raider fans were no happier than Warrior fans as the team recorded its first victory of the season with a 66-56 victory over West Noble. The tourney opened on Friday with the opening games being nothing short of close. As for the Wawasee story, M-J reporter Esti Keen states it was just another re-run as the team lost its battle against West Noble 6260 in over time. “We did everything right,” stated Wawasee coach Jerry Lambert. “It’s the same old thing, we just came up short. We executed well and the defense did the job,” he added, “but I don’t know what to tell you.” The Warriors rallied back from a six point deficit in the third to enjoy a four-point lead with less than two minutes remaining. But a last minute reversal left them shy at the buzzer by one point. Once the Warriors lost the ball Chuck Verba hit a free throw to close in 56-53 at 1:48. Maneuvering the ball to set up a wide-open lay-up, the Warriors missed the final shot. Brian Smith intercepted the outlet pass but could not score. Bolinger of Whitko narrowed it to 56-55 with only 46 seconds remaining. It was over when Smith was called for an offensive foul and there was no more time for the Warriors to build another point cushion. Chuck Verba then contributed his 27th point, game high, to make the decisive basket with eight seconds left on the board. The Warriors called time out with only six seconds left. Keith Cripe dealt well with a full court press and passed the ball to Norm Vanlaningham but the attempt was no good. The ball rolled around the rim and out. Lambert recounted the loss, "Two missed lay-ups, a turn over and a missed free throw were the things that did it. Our guards just didn't control it at all at the end and run the offense,” he said. Another determining factor was rebounds. Whitko led the Warriors by a 35-25 tally. Vanlaningham led the Warriors with 14 points. followed with 13 and Cripe and Francis with 11 and 10. Victory Over West Noble The Warriors are still celebrating their Saturday night victory over West Noble. And, a big victory it was 56-66. “I just can’t say enough for these kids,” beamed a happy Lambert after the game. The victory gives the Warrior team a 1-7 record for the season Lambert had nothing but praises for senior Keith Cripe. “Cripe really gutted it out tonight,” the coach said.” He's been sick all week and he gave us a complete game . . . offense, defense, rebounding ... he did it all.” In all, Cripe scored 15 points and pulled down nine rebounds as well as helping to hold West Noble’s Jay Wysong to seven points for the evening. West Noble was in command of the game at its start and ended the first quarter with a commanding 20-16 lead. Pat Dowden hit for 10 points in that quarter. Then, center Norm Vanlaningham got tough and held the Charger center to only six points in the remaining three quarters. Smith got hot in the second quarter as he hit for 10 points to send the Warriors to the dressing room at half-time with a 34-27 lead. The third quarter too belonged to the Warriors as they entered the final stanza with a 51-33 advantage. Smith was high pant man for Wawasee as he hit for 16, followed by Cripe with 15 and Kent Trobaugh with 12.
