By PATRICIA M. BRAMAN Extension Agent. Home Ec Q. How can you tell if a dish is suitable for the microwave? A. Do this test: pour 4 cup cold water into a glass measure; set measuring cup inside the dish to be tested. Micro-cook for one minute. If water is warm but the dish remains cool or if the dish is warm yet can still be picked up with bare hands, the dish can be used. If the water remains cool and the dish gets too hot to handle, do not use it for microcooking. Q. How long can ham be stored before using? A, Uncanned whole hams should not be stored longer than a week in the refrigerator before cooking; smaller portions not longer than three to five days. Sliced ham is best used within two days. When you purchase a canned ham. check the label for perishability and need of refrigeration. Most large canned hams must be refrigerated before opening and can be stored this way for a few months Freezing any ham is not recommended because of rapid deterioration' in quality and flavor and canned hams do not lend themselves to freezing because erf their high water content. Q. I have difficulty in unmoiding jello. 1 usually dip the mold in hot water and end up melting it. Is there an easier way. A. Dipping in hot water is risky because the water temp, should not go above 115 degrees. First
use a thin knife at several points on the edge to allow you to come between the gel and the container. Reverse the mold onto a chilled platter. If the gelatin does not release, place a warm damp cloth over the mold for a few seconds.
