Congregation third oldest Brethren organization
Turkey Creek Church of the Brethren was organized in 1838. and is the third oldest organization of the Brethren in northern Indiana. The work at Turkey Creek was begun by Elder John Leatherman, who held services in the home of Jacob Brumbaugh. For years, meetings were held in private homes, but in 1854. the congregation began to use the school house. The first worship house was built in 1851. at the site where the Maple Grove church is now located. The present building at Gravelton was erected in 1878. Timbers were hewn by 15 workmen on February 28. 1878, and joined together with wooden pins. The building was dedicated in December 1878. Sunday school was begun at the church April 15.1879. A district meeting was held on October 3. 18S4. at the church, where 3.059 meals were served to those attending. Congregations which were branches of Turkey Creek include Nappanee, Vnion Center. Maple Grove. Bethany. New Paris. Bethel and New Salem. The church house was remodeled in 1919 by adding a small basement and a furnace. On October 4.1938. a centennial service was held and the same day marked the 25th anniversary of the election of Leroy Fisher to the ministry. In 1940. the basement of the church was again enlarged.
