Church organized at Van Curen home
By MRS. WALTER HUNTER The Calvary Baptist Church of Oswego first met and organized April 4, 1954, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. George VanCuren, with an attendance of 49. At their gracious insistence, services were conducted there for the following seven months, while a basement church was being constructed. Rev. Robert Robinson was the temporary pastor. A ground breaking ceremony was held on June 1. Rev. Robinson completed his pastorate on May 10, and on June 10, Rev. Charles Butrin was called as pastor. The church basement was built on the site of the former Oswego school that numerous members had attended while children. We have many happy memories of those days, such as holding our tin cups under the spout of the old pump on the school ground and having some student with big muscles fill it to the brim with cold, sparkling water. We were comparatively few in number, and not rich. Humanlyspeaking, it seemed impossible to pay for the church building. But like Abraham of old, we stepped out in faith and with God's help and much sacrificial giving, were able to meet our financial obligations. We met for the first time in the church basement on Nov. 7, with 91 present. The church mortgage was paid off in the following five years and as the church record reads, "It is with deep thanksgiving to God that we come together tonight to burn the mortgage on the basement." At this time, 31 new members had been added to the church. The average attendance had been 68, and the church membership at that time was 75.

Rev. Butrin resigned and Rev. Nelson Crow was called as the pastor, Sept. 4, 1955. He served faithfully until his death in December, 1962. Rev. Richard Woodworth then became the pastor in June, 1963, and it was under his leadership that the upper structure was put on the church. This was another big step taken in faith, and it was with deep joy and thanksgiving that the new sanctuary was dedicated on April 17, 1966. Just recently (11-6-76) we made our last payment on the upper structure and are looking forward to a mortgage burning service in the near future. Rev. Woodworth resigned in 1968, and Rev. Lee Kantenwein accepted the pastorate Jan. 1, 1969. After his resignation in August, 1972, Donald Fowler was called and occupied the pulpit until his resignation in August, 1975. Gary Meadors served as the interim pastor until he was called to be the fulltime pastor in February, 1976. The Bible tells us that at the dedication service after the temple at Jerusalem was restored through Ezra that many of God's people sang and shouted for |oy — but "many ancient men, that had seen the first house — wept with a loud voice." So with we older ones at Calvary Baptist church, there is a twinge of sadness mixed with our joy, as we recall those dedicated, stalwart Christians who had such a large part in the establishment of the church — but they now "rest from their labours" and are not here to rejoice with us. We know their testimony would be the same as ours: "Hitherto hath the Lord helped us." May we be faithful as a church until our Lord returns!
