Jewish Songs in America' at Manchester December 2

NORTH MANCHESTER - Joe and Penny Aronson, professional musicians, will present a musical-historical revue, “Jewish Song in America,” during convocation at Manchester college on Thursday, Dec. 2, at 10 a.m. The Aronsons will present a panorama of American-Jewish history through authentic, wellchosen songs, placed in context by narration and brought to life through their skills in creating drama and humor. While some of the songs will be in Yiddish and some in Hebrew , there will not be a language problem because they always translate. The songs presented will be about the ways-

of-life, hopes and struggles of the Jewish people in Di Goldene Medina and songs which will reflect the inter-relationship between the Jewish community and America The Aronsons have sung Jewish folk songs together since 1959, making a full-time profession out of what had been Joe’s part-time profession since 1949 They provide their own musical accompaniment — Joe strums guitar while Penny plays mandolin and accordion. The public is invited to attend all convocation programs held in the Manchester college auditorium. There is no admission fee.

FOOG, HICKS t> FIN A Guide To Area Entertainment

Nostalgic comedy entertainment offered at Pickwick this week Set against the background of the depression-ridden Midwest in 1939, Universal’s "The Bingo Long Traveling All-Stars and Motor Kings," starring Billy Dee Williams and James Earl Jones, and also starring Richard Pryor as "Charlie Snow," follows the comedic adventures of a lively group of black ball players who have defected from the old Negro National League.

Barred because of color from competing against their white counterparts in the major leagues, unhappy with the way the Negro league is being operated, the All-Stars turn to barnstorming — »- traveling from town to town in rickety cars and buses, lodging m flea bag hotels and often, eating — — on the run — — food bought at the back doors of white cases. The Motown Production in association with Pan Arts Enterprises is about baseball, but it is not a baseball picture. The film in essence is a slice of American history, recounting a period made colorful by the lifestyle and character of traveling ball players, and a nostalgic comedy entertainment. "The Bingo Long Traveling AllStars and Motor Kings" was filmed on location in the Georgia cities of Macon. Monticello, Balbotton, Jeffersonville and Savannah, under the direction of John Badham, with Berry Gordy as executive producer, and Rob Cohen as producer. Hal Barwood and Matthew Robbins wrote the screenplay based on the novel by William Brashler. The co-starring cast, largely drawn from the New York theatre and the ranks of professional baseball players, is headed by Rico Dawson, Sam "Birmingham" Brison, Jophery Brown, Leon Wagner, Tony Burton, John McCurry. Stan Shaw, DeWayne Jessie, Ted Ross, Mabel King, Sam Laws, Alvin Childress. Ken Foree and Carl Gordon. Billy Dee Williams, previously teamed with Diana Ross in both "Lady Sings the Blues" and "Mahogpny," has the title starring role. He captured an Emmy Award nomination as Best Actor for his performance in "Brian's Song," and also drew plaudits for his acting in television’s "The Glass House." Williams made his motion picture debut in "The Last Angry Man," then went on to appear in "The Out-of-Towners" and "The Final Comedown." On Broadway, he was seen opposite Leslie Uggams in "Hallelujah, Baby ." He returned to the footlights in April as Martin Luther King, Jr. in "I Have a Dream." The co-starring cast includes four professional baseball players. Jophery Brown, a Chicago Cubs pitcher m the late 1960'5. served as stunt coordinator in addition to his acting assignment in the film. Rico Dawson, a former second baseman for the St. Louis Cardinals and the Chicago White Sox, plays Henry Dunbar. Sam "Birmingham” Brison, who returned to the Indianapolis Clowns in 1962. after earlier fame with the Milwaukee Braves and Cincinnati Reds, is cast as Louis. Leon Wagner, portraying a player who leaves the All-Stars when bad luck overtakes the team, was a star leftfieider with the San Francisco Giants and Los Angeles Angels. He ended his baseball career as coach for the Cleveland Indians and Hawaii Islanders. Os the recruits from the world of sports. Wagner alone previously faced theatrical film cameras ("Woman Under the Influence"). Tony Burton, seen as a catcher outfielder, co-starred with James Earl Jones in the screen version of "The River Niger." Other of his features are "Black Bwd,“ "The Black Godfather."

and "Get Fisk." John McCurry, at 243 pounds, and standing six feet, six inches, is the most visible of the co-stars as a dissident slugger. Among his screen appearances are "The Pawnbroker," “The Last Mile," "Across the River," "For the Love of Ivy" and "Cotten Comes to Harlem." Theatregoers applauded him in "Don't Play Us Cheap" and in the road company of "Two Gentlemen From Verona." Stan Shaw, cast as the young rookie, previously faced cameras in "TNT Jackson," "Truck Turner," "Darktown Strutters." and "The Hospital." New York audiences saw him m "Hair," "Via Galactica." "Year of the Mushroom," and "The Me Nobody Knows," for which he received an award as Most Promising Actor. DeWayne Jessie, portraying a ball player who loses his power of speech after being struck on the head with a pitched ball, lists "Halls of Anger," "The New Centurions," “Vrooder's Hooch,” and "Darktown Strutters" among his films, and will be seen in Universal's “Car Wash." Ted Ross, making his film debut, earned a Tony for his performance as the Cowardly Lion in the Broadway comedy hit, "The Wiz." Other of his stage successes were "Big Time Buck White," "Purlie,” and “Raisin.” In "Bingo Long,” he plays the role of Sallison "Sallie" Potter, highhanded owner of a team in the Negro National League. Mabel King, who also won a Tony Award for her performance in "The Wiz," plays Bertha DeWitt, hardnosed owner of another team. Her stage background includes a starring role in the Paris production of "Le Dispute" at the Royal Gaiety Lenque Theatre. Sam Laws, cast as a team owner, was featured in "Hit Man." "Truck Turner.” and "Walking Tall."

Sunshine Blue Birds make tree ornaments Heidi Stuart and Becca Stiver served refreshments to eight members attending the Sunshine Blue Birds meeting on November 24. The girls began work on Christmas decorations for their trees. Ornaments were made from empty thread spools, felt, gold braid trim and small doves. At the next meeting the girls will be making food items to hang on the large pine tree in the Crossen Mill park for the birds and animals. Leaders for the meeting were Mrs. David Ogden and Miss Colleen Walker.
