Wawasee falls in season opener to Carroll Friday

By ESTI KEEN Wawasee lost a hard-fought, tense game to an older, more physical Carroll basketball team last Friday night. The season opener for both teams released a 65-58 decision. With five starters fresh off a season of undefeated football, the Chargers were justifiably an extremely physical ball club. “They just physically manhandled us especially on the offensive boards which was one area that we were concerned about,” said Lambert. “They had the veteran ball players when it came to the crucial part of the game, they didn’t make mistakes.” Wawasee can claim a wide range of resources as Lambert juggled nine players while the Chargers primarily stuck to the starting group In spite of playing in only three stanzas Bryan Smith headed the Warriors with 16 points. Carl followed with 12. Keith Cripe, who had some foul trouble early m the game and saw mostly second half play, managed eight points Carroll stayed out in front throughout most of the game except for the first quarter, which ended in a 14-14 stalemate. Whenever Carroll rolled too far out in front, Wawasee managed to engineer a campaign which evened up the scales Early in the fourth, the Warriors fell to an 11 deficit but soon rallied within one point to make it quite a thriller for the fans before the Chargers rolled away for the victory “I was extremely pleased with the way our guys fought back when it looked like they might blow us out,” Lambert commented “We played very good defense which kept us in the game.” Guards J. D Carl and Bryan Smith did most of the life-saving for the Warriors as they seemed to be everywhere at once. Bryan Smith's display was postponed during the third quarter as he injured his hand and couldn't resume play until halfway into the fourth Said Carroll s mentor. Herm Moyer, on the subject of defense.
