Warriors win over-time clash 33-32 over Culver Military

By ESTI KEEN Tense was the word when the Wawasee-Culver Military clash went into over time after a 20-20 stalemate at the end of regulation play. It was later tied at 32-32 and the balance was ticked when sophomore Dan Andrews kicked for the extra point, giving Wawasee a 33-32 victory "We won and we re happy " beamed Traviolia after the game The score was 26-20 in favor of Culver Military when Wawasee put out its final thrust —a fourth and 16 attempt — -with 129 remaining in the game Keith Cnpe dropped back to pass and spied Joel Popenfoose cutting into the middle at the Eagles’ 22 Cripe fired Popenfoose the ball Popenfoose kept a tight gnp on it even though he was attacked by three pass defenders, making the first dow n Rick Bauman then came into the picture, easing some strain as he darted to the left side of the fine to the Eagle seven He then penetrated the same side for the remaining yards and a tie score with only S 3 seconds remaining A conversion for the Warriors would have wrapped it up for Wawasee but the pigskin was snapped from center to high for Popenfoose to make his run Culver Military took the ball from the IG-yard line and looked to another two plays to get things going Fullback Jerry Nowotny pushed four yards and quarterback Trent Nullins swept right end for the touchdown The conversion, failed Wawasee then gained possession and put Bauman to work handling Culver's left side He gobbled five yards to the five and the remaining yards for the score Andrews knew what he had to do and did it well for the

Warriors victory Bauman ran for 203 yards while Cripe connected eight of 16 aerials for 115 yards plus one vital connection which saved the game for Wawasee in the last period yardage for the left side of the line He was backed up by guard Todd Hepler, tackle Dave Ruth and YMark Francis, “and Popenfoose and Kroh did a heck of a job of lead blocking." Trav followed up. "we penetrated their left side pretty often ” But crisis wasn't exactly unique to the fourth stanza Prior to the fourth period franfics. two interceptions were big events. The first almost pushed it down the dram for the Warriors, the second brought things back up The Eagles were ahead 14-7 in the second quarter when the Warriors drove the ball down to the Eagles' five Cripe dropped back to pass to Tom Kroh at the left side line marker Defensive safety Kent Blankenship snatched the ball and aced 100 yards for the third Culver Military touchdown and a 20-7 lead at intermission. ‘‘l have to take the blame for that one.” Trav admitted "It didn't have the best execution but I called the play.” Wawasee picked off an aerial at the start of the third to get back on the track The pick off was made by Ken Patton. He rambled 59 yards to the Eagles one where Cripe took over to make it 20-13. From then on it was "almost" free sliding for the Warriors “I think the interception started us back, it was a big play by Patton.” Trav commented. Putting a damper on all the spectacular play of the evening was the severe injury to Culver’s star back Mosley who suffered a

bruised kidney and was taken by ambulance to the Goshen hospital Leading tacklers for the Warriors were John Beer, nine tackles and five assists; Mitch Ousley with nine and two; and Bill Rensberger with seven and two.
