■ The worship windows? < «sw Dimension of church reaches farther than local Catholic congregation 8 By FATHER KENNETH SARRAZINE Saint Martin de Porres Catholic Church

Saint Martin de Torres Catholic church has. at one and the same time, a local and present day dimension and a dimension £ that i's world wide and historically far reaching in scope The members of this local congregation are an integral part of the total Catholic church, a church whose present day congregation covers the entire world and extends nearly 2.000 years back into history to the 12 apostles and to Jesus Christ, as founder and head. In its local dimension. Saint Martin de Porres Catholic church is the local congregation of Catholic families and persons gathered around its pastor to worship Almighty God and live a godly life on this earth learning, living and sharing faith and preparing to meet God s call from this life prepared for heavenly glory It is on the local parish family-individual level

that Catholic life is lived and known by the diverse peoples among whom we live. It is first and foremost within the family circle that we come KH to know , love and serve God Our parents who. in cooperation with God. through conception and birth bring us into the human family have the God given privilege and responsibility to introduce us. their children, into the family of God through the sacrament of baptism making us truly children of God Parents begin their children s religious formation and education from |||tt the cradle within the family circle. At that same tender age parents introduce their children into the life of the church on the | f parish level and beyond In the lives of the members of Saint Martin de Porres Catholic church the creed, commandments and sacraments g| enrich daily human life and are. hopefully, carried into the neighborhood job. community and the entire fabric of daily life In this manner, the local parish family endeavors to carry out Our Lord Jesus Christ s commission to His church to carry His message into the entire world. It is in its second and wider dimension, that Saint Martin de Porres Catholic church ranges far beyond the limits of this local community and present generation Saint Martin de Porres Catholic church is a parish unit in

Catholic community's needs grow into present-day mission parish The chapel at Our Lady of the Lake Seminary, Lake Wawasee, was used by the Catholic community in the Syracuse area for several years Then during the early months of 1965. Edvardo Gans contacted Bishop Leo A. Pursley about the possibility of establishing a church in the area. The bishop then wrote to Father Francis Zimmerman Pierceton, to investigate whether such a church was needed. In a letter dated May 5, Father Zimmerman reported that he saw growth in the area and suggested that the church be operated as a mission-parish. On January 19. the official decree of Bishop Pursley was made, outlining the territory and establishing the parish of Saint Martin de Porres Property for the parish was purchased near state road 13 south of Syracuse, on January 23.1966. During Holy Week of 1967, the parishoners moved into the new parish. Father Zimmerman left the Pierceton parish and moved to the new rectory soon after and spoke the first mass as pastor on April 29. 1966 in the parish. Formal dedication of Saint Martin de Porres was made June 11, 1967, with Bishop Pursley presiding. The building was blessed and prayers spoken before a pontifical mass was said by the Bishop. A social celebration followed. Father Zimmerman served as the first father of the parish, and left the post this summer. Recently assuming duties at the parish is Father Kenneth Sarrazine. Advising Father Sarrazine is the pastoral council, comprised of four member couples who serve in an advisory capacity. The council members are Mr. and Mrs. Charles Taylor. Mr. and Mrs. John Glon. Sr.. Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Gans and Mrs. Thomas List. Facilities of the church are made available to the public, such as the Weatherhead union and meetings of the Alcoholics Anonymous But the emphasis of the church is on mass and sacramental facets of the church. Religious instruction for children is given to work along with their public education. “We re really in the building stage of the congregation,” explained Father Sarrazine. saying persons in the congregations bring in ideas and attitudes. A survey has been made to determine further church activities, as determined by theparishoner's needs. A planned project getting good response is the making of a parish directory, with attending families being photographed.
