1 JDE Mb FRANCIS DRAWS CROWD — Wawasee Warrior Mark Francis. 85, is shown drawing a crowd of Plymouth Rockies during the game last Friday night. Plymouth went home the victors, holding onto its Northern Lakes Conference first place standing. -

Playoff chances go down with 20-7 loss to Plymouth

By ESTI KEEN Any Warrior visions of the class AA playoffs were sadly dismissed when Plymouth came to town to reinforce their perfect season The Warriors suffered from three defensive and three of’ fensive major mistakes. What well might have been a three touchdown Wawasee win was a 20-7 upset Coach Hal Traviolia offered afterwards. “We can’t make any excuses, we just have to look to next week. I don’t think we have anything to be ashamed of ... I think we are a better team.” The number one priority was to stop the Rockie ground control offense which ranked fourth on the state class AA roster. At the end of the first quarter it was obvious why. the score was bonded at 0-0 but in those first indicative minutes Wawasee held possession for one minute. The Rockies took the opening kickoff 62 yards before a fumble cooled things off at the Wawasee nine. The Warriors enjoyed four offensive plays before they had to turn the pig skin over to their hungry opponents. After Rick Bauman lighted some Warrior faces by his consecutive 19 and 21 yard runs but the excitement ended when the Warriors fumbled with a misguided hand off two plays later. * Late in the first stanza the Rockies found themselves in a fourth and three situation. Pete

Buchanan dropped back for the punt at the Wawasee 34. Wawasee prepared for the return ... but the ball was slapped into the mits of running back Joe Morris instead of punter Buchanan and the Warriors were too far back to do much about it.. Morris picked up 31 yards and moved the ball all the way up to the three. The next time the Warriors were given the chance they needed to prove themselves came when Greg Evans rambled 30 yards to the Plymouth 20 late in the second quarter. The clencher came two plays later as Rockie John Beeker snatched a Cripe pass in the end zone. That set the scene for a Warrior defensive error. With 14 seconds remaining Albertson handed off to Buchanan for what was expected to be an end sweep. But Buchanan pulled another surprise out of his bag of tricks as he shot a pass back to Albertson. After 75 yards and four broken tackles the Rockies pulled ahead 12-0. The play itself wasn’t what bothered Traviolia; rather, it was the missed tackles. “I could have run that well if I was being tackled like that,” he judged. The successful fake didn’t make things too much easier for the Rockies, however. The Warriors came back in the fourth to push 80 yards in six plays to

make it 12-7 with 11:22 left in the game. A 24-yard Cripe connection to Tom Kroh followed by a Bauman 33-yard skip through midfield, cleared the way for the lone score The ball was placed on the eight and two plays later Bauman landed paydirt. When Albertson found lonely Jim Eads in the Warrior backfield for the 35-yard TD, the Warriors had committed their last defensive error for the night. Bauman picked up 122 yards on 13 carries for a 9.4 yard per carry average. While scoring the Warriors’ only TD, Bauman moved into a tie with Buchanan fcr the NLC scoring lead with 104 points. Cripe completed, a commendable eight of 17 for 92 yards. During the final minutes of the game when Plymouth was giving up the short game for the long bullet he made 68 of those yards. Buchanan was apparently well restrained as his longest single gain was just 10 yards. Tackling Warrior heroes were John Beer and Mitch Ousley who each had eight solo tackles and five assists; also Todd Haines had seven solos and three assists while Ken Patton turned in six solos and six assists. Now 4-3 overall and 2-3 in the NLC Wawasee visits Concord this Friday.
