Keith Hartke campaigns in Milford for his dad
Stressing that people should get out and vote in the upcoming November election, Keith Hartke. 25-year-old son of Democratic senatorial candidate R: Vance Hartke, made a campaign stop in Milford Friday morning. The real estate salesman said he enjoyed campaigning. “It’s a lot of fun because you run into not only a lot of serious issues, but meet real people It's not like hard work." Young Hartke explained that his father feels a person-to-person campaign is important and has structured this race and previous ones in such a manner since 1968 Hartke said he meets with his father in the evenings after a round of campaign stops in an area to discuss what the people he has met have told him Such was the case Friday, when he and candidate Hartke met at an evening fish fry in Knox. To point out the difference in his father’s campaign and that of opponent Richard Lugar. Hartke said Lugar has a money campaign and the Hartke campaign is not a money campaign He commented that his father’s race was being financed through contributions from farmers and the elderly, while Lugar is financed by big business “It sure is heartwarming to know the farmer and elderly care enough that they will contribute/' Hartke added Another topic approached by Hartke was that Lugar has refused to debate Hartke on the

ST WIPING FOR DAD — Keith Hartke. right, meets Cornelia Buck. Section street Milford, during a campaign stop Friday morning urging people to vote and presenting his father's (Democratic senatorial candidate Vance Hartke) stand on several issues.
issues He said campaign facts cited by the Lugar forces are untrue and Hartke wonders. ‘‘Whether or not the state of Indiana can trust a man like that " He went on to say that Lugar is telling a one-sided story and. "My dad doesn't have the money to defend his issues ” Hartke said both candidates would gain ground from a debate and his father only wants a fair campaign "That’s not too much to ask." Harke said "There’s a lot of people mad at my dad because he cut their tax
loopholes," Hartke explained, saying that big business was not going to contribute to his father's campaign for this reason. By re-electing Vance Hartke. his son said. Hoosiers can determine how 50 per cent of the legislation coming through the commerce, commission is shaped by their values, since Hartke would be the committee chairman (The chairman determines the fate of this percentage of the bills.) The committee is the second most powerful committee and the chairmanship has been reached by Hartke through his 18 years of seniority in the senate. Hartke commented.” I'm saying it's there, let's take advantage of it,” Hartke does not have polls and his son said. "Polls I don't think impress anyone but those who make them ” He commented that he believes people are more impressed by accomplishment. But Hartke explained that a Republican poll which has not been released shows his father
moving ahead in the race. "We've got the momentum and that's what's important in this campaign,” Hartke said. Serious thinking needed
It is getting along to that time w>hen the Trick and Treaters will knock on our doors, and.quite likely the UNICEF people will be encouraging the children to collect funds for the United Nations Children’s Fund. I for one, have read and heard from reliable sources that donors to this organization should do some serious thinking before giving to this cause. The much larger proportion of UNICEF's Financing is Financed by contributions from government groups and individuals through out the world, the trick or treat campaign being one example. What I don't like about participation in this type of aid is that too much of it falls into the hands of America's enemies. Os course one could answer back. ‘‘Does God differentiate between enemies and friends when one is
Should consider seniority
Dear Editor: 1 think it is shameful that Indiana is the 50th state in receipt of federal funds. This is a small percentage of what we send to Washington. We have a senior Senator, Vance Hartke, who can and will change that, with the cooperation of the state and local governments. Senator Hartke has consistently voted in favor of such things as federal aid to education, increased social security and veterans benefits, and against federal right to work laws. Even if you don’t love him. or agree with everything he has done, let's consider objectively what our position is now and what a fatal mistake it would be to “dump him”. If we return him to the senate as the fourth term U. S. Senator, he will enter the senate in January of 1977. with eighteen years of seniority. This will make him one of the seniormost senators in the senate. If you have ever had seniority and had bumping rights, or had them used against you to "bump” you off of your job. you know the power of seniority. No place is this more respected than within the "clique” or “club” of the United Sates Senate. With that kind of seniority, Indiana would have a senator who is in a position to wield a great deal of power (like southern senators used to do) for Indiana. When Representative Hays had his “dolly” Elizabeth Ray on his payroll, that made headlines. When a guy is just a decent husband, taking care of his wife and seven children, like you and the rest of us are. he doesn’t make any publicity or paints, but keep up the good work. Dad Hartke, we are aware. You or I may wish to do something to help other people; unemployed, elderly, etc., but we can’t because we’re not in a position to do so. Senator Hartke is and wants to, let’s help him. k Senator Hartke will cut crime in Indiana by cutting unemployment in Indiana with more jobs in Indiana. His seniority means Indiana will have a chairman of the commerce committee and other powerful posts and committees, which for Indiana means more sewers, improved mass transportation, more jobs, and so on. Let's not be foolish and send his opponent there, who will have to start out by asking which way the men's restroom is and which one he, as a freshman, is allowed to use. We, Hoosiers, have a great

hungry, ill-clothed and in dire need of medical attention?” My answer is that too much of this giving goes into the hands of the enemies of God. the Communists. 1 fear we are helping the Communist cause even when we are not aware of it. The United Nations was first thought of as a way to end world conflicts and make the world safe for democracy. But world-wide Communism has taken care of that thought of world freedom in their own selfish way. Tis just about impossible to do business with the Reds! So one ought to think twice, yes. three times before giving to UNICEF. Let's give to an organization that we positively know is on the “right track!" Please think on these things. Clayton J.
