Believer's meetings form basis of present Brethren church members About January 1,1885, Elder John Nicholson, from lowa, was called to Milford by a small group of believers to hold a meeting. The Disciple church (Christian church) gave permission for the use of its building for the meeting. Services continued to be held until January 9, at which time and place the following 13 members were recorded: Elder John Nicholson, Owen Switzer, John Dubbs, Daniel Miller, George Tom, Henry Coy, Eli Culler, Michael Welbaum, Rachel Tom, Mrs. John Dubbs. Rebecca Grimes. Mrs. Michael Welbaum. and Mrs. George Dubbs. The first officers elected were D. E. Deter, secretary and George Dubbs. treasurer. Also established at that time was the creed: "The Bible, the whole Bible, and nothing but the Bible." And the church was named the Brethren church. Named during the organizational period were Perry Early (father of Mrs. U. J. Shively) as first elder and John Montgomery as first deacon. During a business meeting on February 13, 1886, it was decided to build a "brick meetinghouse”, provided enough money could be raised. On April 17,1886. the bids for the work were opened and awarded to Milford area contractors Alonzo Doty got the contract for the stone masonry. Edwin Smith, brick masonry , and J. H. Huffman, carpenter work. And the bell was hung by William Cox. Dedication services for the $3,760 building were held on October 24.1886. At a salary of $l5O per year, the first pastor, B. F. Mallott was hired to preach two sermons a month. The congregation was first known as the Progressive Brethren and Mary Dubbs. later the wife of W. 0. Scott was the first pianist of the church. Over the years, the church has undergone several name changes from the Progressive Brethren to the Grace Brethren church and has now become known as the First Brethren church. The First Brethren church was the parent group of several Sunday school groups These Sundayschool groups came under the jurisdiction of churches in New Paris. Syracuse. Gravelton and Nappanee. Present membership in the church is 99 people, w-ith Rev. Richard Boyd serving as the pastor. Services held at the church include Sunday church school 9:30 a m.. Sunday worship 10:30 am., midweek Bible study Wednesday, 7:30 p.m.; women’s missionary society, first Thursday of each month; women’s prayer circle, each Tuesday at 9 a.m., and the Brethren Youth crusaders, first and third Sundays, is in the process of reorganizing a laymen's group.
T window - / Experiencing spiritual rebirth embodies one's being saved * By REV. RICHARD G. BOYD. First Brethren Church being bom again into the Kingdom of God through faith in A term that is used by the Christian community, which Jesus Christ, probably means little to those outside the faith, is that of The second category to be saved from is worldliness. By "being saved". We all know what it means to be saved from worldliness is meant seeking after those things which bring drowning or a fire. Being saved spiritually is not much dis- unnatural feelings to the body (drugs, alcohol, etc.), or acferent in principle In the Gospel of John a man named dons which are contrary to God s purposes (theft, adultery. , Nicodemus came to Jesus recognizing His power and etc ). These things keep us from knowing God’s blessings. As authority Jesus told him "Except a man be bom again, he Christ was being tempted (Matthew 4), He rebuked Satan by ||t|| cannot see the Kingdom of God" (John 3:3). This is being quoting from the Old Testament “Thou shalt worship the saved being spiritually bom again into the Kingdom of God Lord thy God and Him only shall thou serve” (Deuteronomy The results of this transformation falls into four 10:20). We should seek to serve God and not the dangerous |g|| categories: self, world. God’s wrath, and service. The first lusts of the, world. ■■ - area is that of SELF The basic nature of man left to himself The third category to be saved from is that of God’s is selfishness and greed This selfishness and greed will bring wrath. The Bible has many stories of God’s punishment to |||l about his ultimate destruction Christ tells us in Matthew people who rejected Him. even Israel herself. God is not |||| | 15:19 that man’s nature is against the attributes that God cruel or unjust. He takes no pleasure in bringing punishment created him with. "For out of the heart comes evil thoughts ’’ upon people. However. He is a righteous God and a holy God | We can be saved from self and the evilness of our hearts by who demands that His people live a righteous and holy life ■wnwamawawaili-—-a-w—wwi. - — • '• - ___ a according to His Word, the Bible God also knew that our basic sinful nature would not let us live as we should, so He made provision that all who would accept His Son. Jesus the v fcChrist, would be saved from the punishment that is to come JmtJ to all sinners as told in the Bible The first three areas showed we were saved from uCc something The fourth will show that we are saved for something That something is service and worship to God Qrw Ak The Bible tells us in Matthew 6:33 Seek ye first the Kingdom AM of God and His righteousness". All that has been said can be seen in the most popular verse of Scripture. John 3:16. "For God so loved the world . a that He gave His only begotten Son. that whosoever believeth m Hun should not pensh but have everlasting life." Pastor's name omitted . Members of the Wawasee Heights Baptist church have informed The Mail-Journal that information supplied to it was incomplete and the name of a past pastor was omitted . The Rev. R Dean Cooper, pastor from 1973-75, was not mentioned in the history of the church. Rev. Richard G. Boyd — - — “ i ■■■u— J - -- —
